Turkic States Strengthen Media Cooperation to Combat Disinformation

Senior officials from the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) gathered this week for their 7th ministerial meeting focused on media and information, marking a significant advancement in regional cooperation on communication strategies.

Ferhat Pirincci, Deputy Head of Communications at the Turkish Presidential Administration, highlighted the meeting’s importance as a strategic platform for developing collaborative solutions among Turkic nations. According to Pirincci, the OTS has evolved into a substantial international actor capable of facilitating coordinated initiatives across member states.

“Media and communication serve as fundamental platforms where the future of our nations is shaped,” Pirincci said during the meeting. “These channels have the power to influence cooperation across all sectors of our societies. In today’s digital landscape, collaboration in combating disinformation has become not just beneficial, but necessary.”

The meeting comes at a time when disinformation campaigns have increasingly targeted the region, affecting everything from economic partnerships to security cooperation. Experts note that coordinated media responses have become critical for maintaining regional stability and protecting national interests across the Turkic world.

Pirincci emphasized that Turkey plans to introduce new proposals within the organization’s 2026 Action Plan and stands ready to share its media expertise with other member states. Turkey has developed significant experience in media regulation and digital communication strategies over the past decade, positioning it as a potential leader in regional media cooperation.

The OTS, formerly known as the Turkic Council, includes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan as member states, with Hungary and Turkmenistan participating as observer states. Founded in 2009, the organization has steadily expanded its focus beyond cultural cooperation to include economic integration, security coordination, and now, media collaboration.

Regional analysts point out that strengthening media cooperation offers multiple advantages for member states, including unified messaging on shared concerns, technology transfer for digital media development, and coordinated responses to external information threats.

The initiative also reflects broader trends in international relations, where information security has become a significant component of national security strategies. Many countries now consider media resilience an essential element of sovereignty in the digital age.

Media professionals from across the Turkic states welcomed the initiative, noting that cross-border disinformation has particularly affected coverage of regional conflicts and economic developments. Shared language roots among member states create both opportunities and challenges, as information flows easily across borders but so does misleading content.

The 2026 Action Plan is expected to include provisions for joint training programs, technical assistance, and possibly the creation of shared digital platforms. These initiatives aim to enhance media capabilities while preserving distinct national media identities within the broader Turkic framework.

Industry observers note that the OTS media cooperation could eventually extend beyond government communications to include private media organizations and educational institutions, creating a more comprehensive approach to information resilience.

As global competition for information influence intensifies, regional groupings like the OTS are increasingly finding value in coordinated media strategies. The outcomes of this ministerial meeting will likely shape how Turkic states approach digital communication challenges in the coming years, potentially offering a model for similar regional organizations around the world.
