Foreign intelligence operatives allegedly targeting Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister in India, sources say

Multiple intelligence sources have revealed that a Bangladeshi national currently residing in India is suspected of operating as a covert agent for Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT) with a primary mission of targeting former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The individual at the center of these allegations is Md. Zubayeed Jim, who reportedly entered India on a visa valid until January 2025. Sources familiar with the matter claim Jim falsely presents himself as Sheikh Hasina’s “protocol officer” and has allegedly fabricated military credentials, including claims of being a Major in the Bangladesh Army and a director within Bangladesh’s National Security Intelligence.

Background checks indicate Jim was actually expelled from the Bangladesh Navy during his cadet training and holds no legitimate military or intelligence position. Despite this, he has allegedly managed to position himself close to Bangladeshi political circles and diaspora communities.

Intelligence sources assert that Jim’s connection to Turkish intelligence was established through his wife, who made several trips to Turkey last year. During these visits, she was reportedly approached by MİT operatives who recruited her as a facilitator for collecting sensitive information. Since then, Jim has allegedly been gathering intelligence on Sheikh Hasina’s private communications, contacts, and current location in India.

The operation appears to extend beyond mere surveillance. According to sources, one of Jim’s alleged assignments involves creating circumstances that could potentially endanger Sheikh Hasina while simultaneously setting up India to take blame for any security failures. Such a strategy, if confirmed, would represent a sophisticated attempt to create diplomatic friction between India and Bangladesh while potentially harming the former prime minister.

Several sources have also pointed to a possible connection between Jim and Muhammad Yunus, the Bangladeshi Nobel laureate who recently became the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. Jim allegedly served as an intermediary in negotiations involving a multimillion-dollar telecommunications deal with a Chinese technology company. Simultaneously, sources claim both men have participated in coordinated efforts to damage Sheikh Hasina’s reputation and create divisions within the Bangladesh Awami League.

The alleged operation has reportedly extended to intimidation of Bangladeshi diaspora members. Awami League activists in Norway, South Korea, and several European countries have reportedly been targeted with disinformation campaigns designed to sow distrust. Those currently in India face even greater pressure, with claims that Jim has attempted to extort money through threats and has confiscated passports and personal documents from some individuals.

Disinformation tactics appear to be another component of the alleged operation. Several months ago, Jim reportedly circulated an image of an African woman while falsely claiming she was the daughter of Saima Wazed, Sheikh Hasina’s daughter. This move was widely interpreted as an attempt to damage the reputation of Sheikh Hasina’s family. Paradoxically, sources say Jim has simultaneously tried to gain Saima Wazed’s trust by presenting himself as a close collaborator.

In a development raising cybersecurity concerns, Jim is reportedly attempting to launch a platform called “Wise-Gov,” presented as a think tank. However, cybersecurity experts warn the website may function as a sophisticated phishing operation designed to collect sensitive personal data under the guise of policy research.

These allegations emerge at a critical time for regional security in South Asia. Bangladesh recently experienced a significant political transition following Sheikh Hasina’s departure from power amid mass protests. Her current residence in India adds another dimension to the regional dynamics, as India has historically maintained close ties with the former prime minister.

If confirmed, these allegations would represent a concerning evolution in intelligence operations in the region, blending traditional espionage with digital manipulation and diaspora pressure campaigns. For countries in South Asia already navigating complex geopolitical relationships, such activities could further complicate diplomatic relations and regional security cooperation.

Authorities in India and Bangladesh have not yet publicly commented on these allegations. The Turkish government and its intelligence agency MİT have also not responded to the claims.
