Turkey Denies Reports of Airspace Closure and Restrictions on U.S. Military Operations

Recent claims suggesting Turkey has imposed severe restrictions on the United States, including airspace closure and blocking access to a strategic military base, have been refuted by officials and fact-checkers.

The allegations first appeared in a video posted on Facebook by a page called “Hii Thann” on March 30. In the video, a host from a program called “Вектор Влияния” (“Vector of Influence”) claimed that Turkey had closed its airspace to U.S. aircraft, “blocked” the American Incirlik Air Base, and implemented higher tariffs on various American products.

Investigation into these claims has found no evidence supporting such dramatic shifts in U.S.-Turkey relations. As of mid-April, Turkish authorities have made no official announcements regarding airspace restrictions for U.S. aircraft, and no reputable media organizations have reported such developments.

U.S. military aircraft continue to utilize Turkish airspace as normal. In fact, on March 27, an American military aircraft that had departed from a base in Greece made an emergency landing at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, demonstrating continued access to these facilities.

Incirlik Air Base, located in Turkey’s southern Adana province, remains one of NATO’s most strategically important installations in the region. The base hosts the 39th Air Base Wing, whose mission involves supporting U.S. and NATO interests by maintaining a rapidly deployable operational air base. This facility has played a crucial role in various regional operations and continues to function as a cornerstone of U.S.-Turkey military cooperation.

While Turkey has emphasized that the base remains under Turkish sovereignty—not American ownership—this position is consistent with long-standing arrangements rather than representing a new restriction. The distinction has become particularly important following regional conflicts, with Turkey clarifying its position on the use of its territory.

Turkish officials have specifically stated that while American troops continue to be stationed at the base within the framework of NATO cooperation, Turkey will not allow its territory, airspace, or bases to be used by the U.S. or Israel for attacks against Iran. This policy reflects Turkey’s attempt to maintain its strategic autonomy in an increasingly complex regional environment rather than indicating a new restriction targeting the United States.

Regarding the claims about increased tariffs on American products, no such measures have been implemented recently. Turkey did impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in 2018 after the United States raised tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel, but most of these restrictions were lifted following diplomatic improvements between the countries. Since that resolution, Turkey has not reimposed higher tariffs on American imports during former President Donald Trump’s second term.

The source of these misleading claims appears to be a fabricated news program. “Вектор Влияния” exists only on a YouTube channel of the same name and features AI-generated content, including an artificially created host. The channel, which describes itself as analytical and fact-based, primarily shares pro-Russian content. An English-language version of the same video was published on the channel on March 26.

Further investigation revealed that the Facebook page sharing these videos also distributes identical content under different program names, such as “Новостной Вектор” (“News Vector”) and “Вектор Новостей” (“Vector News”), suggesting a coordinated disinformation campaign.

This fabricated story appears designed to create an impression of deteriorating relations between NATO allies at a time when regional tensions are already high. The false claims about Turkey imposing restrictions on the U.S. military presence could potentially undermine trust in the NATO alliance and sow confusion about America’s strategic position in the Middle East.

The U.S.-Turkey relationship, while sometimes strained by differing regional priorities, remains fundamentally intact with continued military cooperation through NATO and shared strategic interests in regional stability.
