Turkish officials have moved swiftly to counter rumors regarding a diverted flight to Libya, emphasizing that weather conditions, not security concerns, prompted the change in landing plans.

Turkey’s Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM) issued a formal statement Sunday rejecting claims that Turkish Airlines flight TK641 from Istanbul to Benghazi was diverted due to fears of potential retaliation following a tragic plane crash near Ankara that killed eight members of a Libyan military delegation.

“The flight was diverted to Bodrum Milas Airport due to wind conditions at the destination airport exceeding operational limits. There was no route change for any other reason,” the DMM clarified in its statement published on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.

The agency emphasized that scheduled flights to Libya have continued without interruption in the days following the incident, demonstrating normal operations between the two countries.

The rumors emerged against the backdrop of a December 23 crash involving a private jet carrying high-ranking Libyan officials, including Chief of General Staff General Mohammed Ali Al-Haddad. The aircraft went down near Ankara, killing all eight people aboard, and sending shockwaves through both countries’ diplomatic and military establishments.

Turkey responded to the tragedy with a formal funeral ceremony and pledged full cooperation in the international investigation into the crash. These actions underscored the strategic importance of Turkish-Libyan relations, which have grown increasingly significant in recent years.

The Turkish government appears particularly concerned about preventing misinformation that could damage its carefully cultivated relationship with Libya. Turkey has emerged as a key supporter of the internationally recognized Government of National Accord in Tripoli, providing military assistance, economic partnerships, and diplomatic backing.

“We urge the public not to give credence to such unfounded claims containing disinformation aimed at undermining our relations with friendly and brotherly Libya through a tragic accident,” the DMM statement continued, highlighting Ankara’s sensitivity to preserving bilateral ties.

The swift official response reflects Turkey’s growing concern about the impact of disinformation on its foreign policy objectives. In recent years, the Turkish government has expanded its capabilities to monitor and counter narratives it considers harmful to national interests, particularly in regions where it maintains strategic partnerships.

The aviation incident comes at a sensitive time for Turkish-Libyan relations. The countries have deepened their cooperation since signing a maritime boundary agreement in 2019 that redrew parts of the Eastern Mediterranean map, angering Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt in the process. Turkey has also provided critical military support that helped the Tripoli government withstand a 2019-2020 offensive by eastern-based forces.

Aviation analysts note that weather diversions are routine safety procedures that airlines implement when conditions at destination airports fall outside operational parameters. Turkish Airlines, the national flag carrier, operates according to international safety standards that prioritize passenger security over scheduling considerations.

Regional security experts who monitor North Africa and Eastern Mediterranean developments suggest that the rapid spread of rumors about the flight diversion demonstrates the fragility of public information ecosystems in areas experiencing ongoing political tensions. The incident highlights how quickly misinformation can take hold in complex geopolitical environments where multiple external powers maintain competing interests.

As the investigation into the Ankara plane crash continues, both Turkish and Libyan officials are likely to maintain close communication to prevent further misunderstandings that could undermine their strategic partnership. The relationship remains a cornerstone of Turkey’s expanding influence in North Africa and the broader Mediterranean region.
