Turkey has firmly rejected claims circulating on social media that it plans to join the Middle East conflict in support of Iran or intervene in Lebanon, labeling such reports as deliberate disinformation.

The Turkish Center for Countering Disinformation issued a statement on Monday addressing what it described as unfounded allegations designed to mislead the public through psychological operations. The center emphasized that these false reports appear intended to distort Turkey’s diplomatic position in the increasingly complex regional situation.

“The Republic of Türkiye has consistently maintained that it is not a party to the conflict,” the statement read, using the country’s officially preferred English spelling. Officials underscored that under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s leadership, Ankara remains committed to diplomatic engagement aimed at de-escalating tensions, ending hostilities, and fostering sustainable peace in the region.

The denial comes amid heightened tensions following Iran’s unprecedented direct missile attack on Israel earlier this month and ongoing fears of a wider regional war. The conflict has expanded beyond the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza to include escalations on multiple fronts, including Lebanon, where Israel has intensified operations against Hezbollah.

Turkish authorities pointed out that the country’s balanced approach to Middle Eastern affairs has earned recognition from international actors, including parties directly involved in the conflict. Under Erdoğan, Turkey has maintained communication channels with multiple sides while consistently criticizing Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

The Center for Countering Disinformation warned that the misleading content spreading across social media platforms appears designed to undermine Turkey’s standing in international relations and misrepresent its diplomatic efforts in the region. Such disinformation could potentially damage Turkey’s carefully calibrated position as a regional power with ties to multiple actors.

Turkey has historically positioned itself as a potential mediator in Middle Eastern conflicts, maintaining relations with both Iran and Israel, though ties with the latter have deteriorated significantly since the Gaza war began last October. Despite strong rhetoric condemning Israeli actions, Turkey has continued its pragmatic approach to regional diplomacy, avoiding direct military involvement.

The statement urged the Turkish public to exercise caution when consuming information during this sensitive period and to rely exclusively on official statements from authorized government sources rather than unverified social media reports. Officials emphasized the particular dangers of misinformation during times of regional crisis, when false narratives can rapidly spread and exacerbate tensions.

Turkey’s strategic position as a NATO member with deep cultural and historical ties to the Middle East gives its diplomatic stance particular significance. The country has been balancing multiple considerations, including its relations with Western allies, regional powers, and its own domestic concerns regarding the ongoing conflicts.

While maintaining its strong rhetorical support for Palestinian causes, Turkey has also been careful to avoid actions that could draw it directly into the widening regional conflict. The government’s swift move to counter these rumors reflects concern about how misinformation could potentially pressure its carefully managed diplomatic position or create domestic political complications.

As regional tensions continue to escalate, Turkey appears determined to maintain its role as a diplomatic actor working toward de-escalation while firmly rejecting any suggestions of military intervention that could further destabilize an already volatile situation.
