In a direct challenge to Pakistani authorities, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Noor Wali Mehsud has appeared in a video dismissing claims of his death and asserting the militant group’s territorial control within Pakistan’s borders.

The video, reportedly filmed in the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district, shows Mehsud accusing Islamabad of running a “deliberate disinformation campaign” regarding his supposed elimination. Pakistani officials had previously claimed Mehsud was killed in an airstrike in Kabul on October 9.

“I am not present in Afghanistan; I am in the Khyber region and continue my work from here,” Mehsud declared in the footage, which intelligence sources confirm was shot inside Pakistani territory. In a provocative display of confidence, Mehsud can be seen gesturing toward Pakistani Army posts visible on a nearby ridge.

Sources familiar with the situation told News18 that Pakistan’s claims of eliminating Mehsud were designed to “project operational success under American pressure” and to “calm domestic criticism.” The appearance of the TTP leader inside Pakistan represents a significant intelligence failure for the Pakistani military establishment headquartered at GHQ Rawalpindi.

The video has particular significance as Mehsud specifically references the Kuki Khel and Qambar Khel tribal belts, highlighting the depth of the TTP’s influence near Peshawar’s gateway. Security analysts view this as evidence that the militant group maintains de facto control of key tribal zones despite Pakistan’s claims of successful clearance operations.

Indian intelligence sources assert that Pakistan’s military and Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) deliberately circulated false information about Mehsud’s death without forensic or ground confirmation. These sources claim that tracking of digital signatures showed over 70 percent of initial posts about Mehsud’s supposed death originated from ISPR-linked accounts.

“This propaganda was part of a broader deception plan to hide the Pakistan army’s loss of control over the western tribal belt,” one intelligence source said. “The timing was designed to divert attention from the TTP’s territorial claims in Khyber and North Waziristan, where local militias have surrendered to militants.”

In the video, Mehsud urged his followers to continue their jihad and not be influenced by the propaganda of Pakistan’s “evil army.” He emphasized treating local populations well, noting they are the source of the group’s strength.

Mehsud took over TTP leadership in 2018 after his three predecessors were killed by U.S. drone strikes. Analysts credit him with reviving the organization, transforming its strategy, and uniting warring factions through diplomatic skill. Trained as a religious scholar, he has reportedly shifted the group’s tactics away from civilian targets to focus primarily on military and police installations.

The Taliban’s 2021 takeover of neighboring Afghanistan has given the TTP greater freedom of movement and improved access to weapons, contributing to an escalation of attacks inside Pakistan, particularly in the northwest border regions. Earlier this year, Mehsud released a rare video speech portraying Pakistan’s army as anti-Islamic and criticizing its political role.

The reappearance of Mehsud undermines Pakistan’s counter-terrorism narrative at a critical time when the country has been attempting to demonstrate progress to international bodies like the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Pakistan has frequently alleged that the TTP has perverted Islamic teachings and receives support from India, accusations that New Delhi consistently denies.

The brazen video appearance suggests that despite years of military operations, the Pakistani security establishment continues to face significant challenges in controlling militant activity along its western frontier, raising concerns about regional stability and counter-terrorism effectiveness.
