In a troubling escalation of political tensions, former President Donald Trump faced another violent attack on April 25, 2026, marking the third such incident in three years. The latest attack occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton, where a gunman attempted to breach security.
As authorities continue investigating the incident, political violence experts warn that this event highlights a dangerous pattern emerging in American politics. James Piazza, a political violence scholar at Penn State University, notes that the United States is experiencing an alarming rise in politically motivated violence.
“I think the events of April 25 underscore how dangerous this political moment is in the United States,” Piazza explained. “For the past several years – certainly since January 6, 2021 – the U.S. has been experiencing a period of increased political violence.”
Researchers at the Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab have documented this troubling trend. Recent high-profile incidents include the January 6 Capitol insurrection, multiple assassination attempts targeting Trump, deadly attacks on Minnesota lawmakers Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman, the attempted murder of Paul Pelosi, the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, and an attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence.
According to Piazza, several factors are driving this surge in political violence. Extreme polarization has created a toxic political environment where Americans view opposing parties not simply as having different viewpoints but as fundamentally immoral or evil.
“What stands out to me is the moral dimension of polarization in the U.S.,” Piazza said. “Each side views members of the other party not as merely having a different view on politics but rather as evil or immoral. The polarized environment has made political violence more normalized.”
Increasingly divisive and violent political rhetoric further exacerbates tensions. Politicians who use dehumanizing language to attack opponents create fertile ground for extremism and violence. Simultaneously, disinformation and conspiracy theories, particularly those spreading through social media echo chambers, have been linked to radicalization and violence.
Piazza also points to eroding democratic norms and institutions as a critical factor. “U.S. democracy is experiencing pressures that are unprecedented in the modern era,” he noted. “This has had a very damaging effect on Americans’ trust in government, confidence in democratic institutions and value for democratic rule itself.”
His research demonstrates that individuals skeptical about democracy are significantly more likely to express support for political violence.
While the current climate of political violence is deeply concerning, Piazza emphasizes that it is not unprecedented in American history. The pre-Civil War period of the 1850s saw similar polarization between abolitionists and slavery advocates, resulting in political assassinations, congressional violence, and armed conflicts. Other violent periods occurred in the early 1900s during labor disputes and Ku Klux Klan activity, and in the 1960s amid Vietnam War protests and Civil Rights Movement backlash.
What distinguishes today’s political violence is the amplifying effect of social media, which can rapidly spread inflammatory content and disinformation to millions of people within hours.
In the aftermath of the latest attack on Trump, Piazza stresses the importance of a unified response from political leaders across the spectrum. “I believe it is absolutely critical that both Democratic and Republican politicians – politicians from all sides – unite to condemn this attack and all political violence,” he said.
Research shows that statements from political leaders, media commentators, and social media influencers significantly impact public attitudes. A consistent, bipartisan rejection of political violence could help reduce the underlying conditions that enable such attacks.
As the nation grapples with this latest incident, the response from leaders may prove crucial in determining whether political violence continues to escalate or whether a renewed commitment to democratic norms can help reverse this dangerous trend.

This is a concerning trend of political violence that needs to be addressed. Cooler heads must prevail and leaders from all sides should condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms.
The rise of political violence is a worrying sign of the times. As a nation, we must recommit to nonviolent conflict resolution and safeguarding our democratic institutions. Finger-pointing won’t solve this – we’re all in this together.
This kind of political violence is unacceptable in a democracy. Authorities need to get to the bottom of these incidents and ensure the perpetrators are held accountable. At the same time, leaders across the political spectrum must condemn such acts and work to ease tensions.
While I’m no fan of Trump, the escalation of political violence is deeply troubling. Targeted attacks against any politician, regardless of party, undermine the foundations of democracy. Authorities must get to the bottom of this and hold the perpetrators accountable.
I agree, political violence cannot be tolerated. Partisan divides are no excuse for such extremism. Leaders must set an example of civility and respect, even for opponents.
Disturbing to see this pattern of attacks. Political disagreements should be settled peacefully through the democratic process, not violence. I hope the authorities can restore order and prevent further escalation.
Couldn’t agree more. Resorting to violence is a dangerous path that only breeds more conflict. We need to find ways to bridge divides and work towards common ground.
