Health Disinformation Crisis Deepens, Threatening Public Health Across America
The deliberate spread of health disinformation has reached alarming levels across the United States, fueled by technological advancements, shifting political landscapes, and the growing influence of anti-vaccine movements.
Nearly two years after experts identified disinformation as America’s leading health threat, the situation has worsened significantly. Several factors have converged to create what many public health experts describe as a perfect storm threatening evidence-based medicine and public trust.
Artificial intelligence has emerged as a powerful accelerant of health misinformation. While AI offers tremendous potential to revolutionize healthcare through data organization and analysis, it simultaneously enables bad actors to create and distribute false content at unprecedented scale and sophistication.
A recent NewsGuard investigation of OpenAI’s Sora 2 text-to-video generator revealed how easily the technology allows individuals with minimal technical expertise to produce convincingly realistic but entirely fabricated videos. The report documented five false claims traced directly to Russian disinformation networks, highlighting the geopolitical dimension of the problem.
Major AI chatbots have similarly become vectors for propaganda. Russia has systematically flooded the internet with pro-Kremlin narratives specifically designed to contaminate the training data used by leading AI systems. According to Wired magazine, platforms including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, China’s DeepSeek, and xAI’s Grok have unknowingly incorporated and now reproduce Russian state propaganda.
Political shifts have further complicated America’s response to disinformation. The Trump administration has dramatically reduced the country’s defenses against both domestic and foreign disinformation campaigns. An executive order now prevents federal agencies from discouraging harmful posts online, effectively removing a significant constraint on disinformation peddlers—including foreign intelligence operatives posing as Americans.
The administration also shuttered the State Department’s Foreign Malign Influence Center, which had been tasked with “mitigating threats to democracy and U.S. national interests” with its $61 million budget. This decision comes as Russia, Iran, and China collectively spend billions annually to influence public opinion worldwide.
Perhaps the most consequential development has been the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Kennedy, a prominent figure in the global anti-vaccine movement, founded and chaired Children’s Health Defense, which NPR described as “a prolific content creator and a leading source of false and misleading claims about vaccines.”
Kennedy’s leadership at HHS has prompted unprecedented opposition from the medical establishment. Six former U.S. Surgeons General published an open letter warning that his policies pose an “immediate and unprecedented threat” to the nation’s health. The American Academy of Pediatrics, along with five other leading medical organizations, filed a federal lawsuit challenging Kennedy’s “unilateral changes to COVID-19 vaccine policy without citing scientific evidence.”
State legislatures across the country have introduced more than 400 bills challenging evidence-based public health practices, including vaccination requirements and pasteurized milk standards. According to PBS reporting, at least 350 of these bills specifically target vaccines. Eleven states have already enacted more than two dozen laws restricting vaccine access.
Anti-vaccine groups have seized the opportunity to amplify their message. The McCullough Foundation recently published a report co-authored with Andrew Wakefield—whose discredited research helped launch the modern anti-vaccine movement—claiming childhood vaccinations drive autism risk. Critics note the report ignores rigorous peer-reviewed research disproving vaccine-autism links while citing retracted studies and questionable sources.
The consequences of this disinformation epidemic are becoming increasingly evident. CDC data shows vaccine exemptions at record highs, with kindergarten vaccination rates dropping across multiple preventable diseases. MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) coverage has fallen to 92.5%, below the 95% threshold needed to prevent disease transmission. Only ten states maintain adequate vaccination levels.
The results are predictable and alarming. Twenty-five years after measles was declared eliminated in the United States, the country has recorded 1,681 cases this year alone—the highest count since 1992 and more than double the total cases documented throughout the entire 2000s.
Public health experts warn that without immediate intervention to counter disinformation and restore trust in evidence-based medicine, more preventable disease outbreaks are inevitable, threatening decades of progress in public health.
