South Sudan Denounces Fabricated Investigation Document Targeting Former Vice President

South Sudanese justice officials have strongly condemned the circulation of what they describe as a fraudulent investigative report implicating former Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel, labeling it a sophisticated disinformation attempt aimed at undermining government institutions.

The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs issued a formal statement this week dismissing the document titled “Investigation Committee Leak Report; Bol Mel Electronic Diary” that has been spreading across social media platforms in recent days. According to authorities, the purported report has no connection to any legitimate government inquiry.

Justice Minister Michael Makuei Lueth did not mince words in his assessment, describing the document as “a total fabrication” and “a baseless work of fiction.” The ministry’s Investigation and Prosecution Committee further clarified that no record exists of any “electronic diary” or financial allegations referenced in the material.

“The individuals, figures, and narratives cited in this document bear no relation to any ongoing or past investigations under the committee’s mandate and carry absolutely no legal standing,” the statement emphasized, highlighting the document’s complete lack of authenticity.

Government officials pointed to numerous technical deficiencies that expose the document as fraudulent. Legitimate government findings are never released as “leak reports” or distributed through anonymous digital channels, they explained. Instead, official reports follow strict protocols involving formal and secured government communication systems.

“As a matter of standard procedure, the Committee confirms that any document surfacing via anonymous digital channels is, by definition, a forgery lacking any institutional legitimacy,” the statement continued.

Further undermining the document’s credibility, officials noted its absence of essential authentication elements that would be present in any genuine government communication – including letterheads, serial numbers, authentication codes, and other standard identifiers.

This incident comes amid growing concerns about digital misinformation in South Sudan, where social media platforms have increasingly become battlegrounds for political narratives. The nation, which gained independence in 2011 and has faced significant governance challenges, has seen a proliferation of unverified political content targeting senior officials and institutions.

South Sudan’s fragile political landscape makes it particularly vulnerable to such disinformation campaigns. The country continues to implement a peace agreement following years of civil conflict, with government legitimacy and institutional trust remaining crucial to stability.

Media analysts in the region suggest this incident reflects a broader pattern emerging across several East African nations, where digital disinformation increasingly targets political figures during periods of transition or tension. The fabricated report appears designed to create confusion about accountability mechanisms within South Sudan’s government structure.

The Justice Ministry has urged media organizations and social media users to exercise caution and rely exclusively on verified government statements when reporting on legal or investigative matters. Officials warned that spreading falsified documents not only misleads the public but potentially undermines crucial accountability mechanisms in a country still building its democratic institutions.

“The spread of such fabricated materials risks weakening the integrity of our justice system at a time when public trust in government institutions remains essential to our national development,” a senior ministry official explained.

Government authorities have not indicated whether they plan to investigate the source of the fabricated document or pursue legal action against those responsible for creating and distributing it.

The incident highlights the growing challenges facing South Sudan’s information ecosystem as digital literacy expands but verification mechanisms struggle to keep pace with rapidly spreading content across social platforms.
