Russian Disinformation Network Curator Detained in Argentina

Argentine authorities have detained Russian national Dmitry Novikov, identified as a key figure in a sophisticated Russian influence operation targeting President Javier Milei’s government and state institutions, officials announced Wednesday.

According to Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, which operates under the National Security and Defense Council, Novikov was a leading operative in a network known as “La Compañía” or “Lakhta.” The organization allegedly maintains direct ties to Russian intelligence services and had connections to the notorious Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary organization active in various global conflicts.

Argentina’s Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva described Novikov in stark terms, calling him “a threat to the democratic order” who had entered the country with the explicit purpose of destabilizing and undermining Argentine institutions.

The arrest marks a significant development in Argentina’s efforts to counter foreign interference and highlights growing concerns about Russia’s expanding global influence operations beyond its traditional spheres of interest.

Investigators revealed that La Compañía systematically worked to discredit President Milei, who has been outspoken in his support for Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky since taking office in December 2023. The network reportedly employed coordinated bot farms to spread manipulative narratives on social media platforms, attempting to frame Argentina’s solidarity with Ukraine as merely “following Washington’s orders” and creating an unnecessary financial burden on Argentine taxpayers.

The timing of these influence operations comes as Argentina faces significant economic challenges, including record inflation rates exceeding 200% and controversial austerity measures implemented by Milei’s administration. These economic vulnerabilities potentially created fertile ground for foreign influence campaigns seeking to exploit social tensions.

“This incident confirms the Kremlin’s determination to extend its information warfare to all regions where governments demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine,” Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation stated. “They utilize shadow structures and sophisticated public opinion manipulation tactics to achieve their objectives.”
