In a significant development, French intelligence officials have identified a coordinated Russian disinformation campaign targeting European audiences, with a German far-right figure emerging as a key conduit for pro-Kremlin messaging.

France’s Viginum, the government agency responsible for combating foreign digital interference, has attributed a series of false narratives to a Russian operation codenamed Storm-1516. According to Viginum’s statement, Storm-1516 has been “publicly attributed to Unit 29155 of the Russian military intelligence service (GRU),” linking the campaign directly to Moscow’s military intelligence apparatus.

In a comprehensive report published last year, Viginum warned that Storm-1516’s activities “meet the criteria of a foreign digital interference and represent a significant threat to the digital public debate, both in France and in all European countries.” This assessment underscores growing concerns about Russia’s information warfare capabilities across the European continent.

The scale of pro-Russian disinformation has expanded dramatically since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. These campaigns have evolved beyond simple propaganda, now employing sophisticated tactics to undermine support for Ukraine. Many narratives aim to discredit Ukraine’s military forces, European allies providing critical support, and President Volodymyr Zelensky’s leadership. Other efforts specifically target Western leaders who have maintained strong support for Kyiv, including French President Emmanuel Macron.

An investigation into one outlet, Anonymous News, has revealed connections to a network of individuals actively promoting pro-Russian narratives. The investigation uncovered a surprising cast of characters involved in this information ecosystem, including a German far-right activist, an officer from Russia’s Federal Security Service, and a Bulgarian citizen who was reportedly compensated to serve as the nominal owner of a media company collecting reader donations.

Anonymous News has positioned itself as a source of “uncensored news” for German-speaking audiences. Its website attracts approximately 100,000 monthly visitors according to traffic analytics data, and consistently promotes content featuring pro-Kremlin viewpoints and anti-Western messaging. The outlet has also been involved in distributing hacked documents allegedly obtained from the British government.

While the website itself provides no information about its staff or ownership, one individual has recently begun serving as the public face of the organization’s new Moscow-based YouTube channel. Mario Rönsch, who has described himself as the Editor-in-Chief of Anonymous News, launched the “ANTVAuslandsStudio” channel in October with a video filmed in front of the Kremlin. In this inaugural broadcast, Rönsch portrayed himself as a victim of persecution by German intelligence agencies who had relocated to Russia to deliver what he called “authentic, uncensored” coverage “always committed to the truth.”

The channel has proven remarkably successful, garnering over one million views in just four months with German-language content that consistently portrays life in Russia in a positive light while criticizing Western governments.

This case illustrates the increasingly blurred lines between independent media, state-sponsored disinformation, and extremist political activism. Security experts have warned that Russia’s information operations have grown more sophisticated since the Ukraine invasion began, with the Kremlin now relying more heavily on Western voices who can lend credibility to its narratives among specific audience segments.

The revelations come as European governments struggle to counter foreign information manipulation without compromising democratic values like free speech. Several EU member states have implemented new regulatory frameworks to address these challenges, though critics argue more coordination is needed to effectively counter cross-border disinformation campaigns.
