Russian Disinformation Campaign Targets Ukrainian Defense Minister with False Yacht Allegations
Ukrainian authorities have uncovered a coordinated Russian disinformation operation targeting Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, adding to the growing list of information warfare tactics employed in the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
The SPRAVDI Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security reported that Russian-controlled media outlets simultaneously circulated fabricated claims about Fedorov’s wife, Anastasia Fedorova, allegedly purchasing a yacht in France. The center, which specializes in combating misinformation, identified clear patterns of a synchronized information attack designed to undermine public trust in Ukraine’s defense leadership.
“This campaign exhibits all the hallmarks of a coordinated information operation originating from Russian intelligence services,” a representative from the center stated.
Investigators traced the origin of the false claims to a Telegram channel named “ORD. Criminal Forum,” which published the initial allegation on April 29. The Ukrainian Security Service (SSU) had previously blocked access to related ORD network websites in 2025 due to their connections with Russian intelligence operations.
Within hours of the initial post, the disinformation spread across a network of pseudo-Ukrainian Telegram channels under Russian control, pro-Russian bloggers, mainstream Russian media outlets, and the Pravda network—a platform frequently utilized by Moscow for international information operations targeting Western audiences.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense promptly issued a categorical denial, confirming to SPRAVDI that the information about the supposed yacht purchase was entirely fabricated. Further investigation revealed that the vessel registration number circulated in the false reports was fictitious and doesn’t appear in France’s official PROMETE maritime registry.
This incident highlights Russia’s continuing efforts to weaponize information as part of its broader strategy against Ukraine. Information warfare has become a critical component of modern conflict, with digital platforms providing fertile ground for spreading false narratives designed to create public distrust in Ukrainian government officials.
Security experts note that targeting high-profile defense officials like Fedorov is a deliberate tactic intended to create division within Ukraine’s leadership and undermine public confidence in the military establishment at a critical juncture in the conflict.
“These operations typically aim to create internal discord and distract Ukrainian officials from their primary duties during key moments in the conflict,” explained Dmytro Zolotukhin, a disinformation expert from Kyiv’s National Academy for Public Administration.
The SPRAVDI Center has urged Ukrainian citizens to exercise caution when consuming information online, particularly recommending skepticism toward unverified claims from questionable sources. Media literacy has become increasingly important as Russian disinformation campaigns have grown more sophisticated, often mixing elements of truth with fabricated details to increase credibility.
This incident comes amid reports that the Kremlin has attempted to purchase Arab Telegram channels to expand its information warfare capabilities against Ukraine, suggesting a broadening of Russia’s geographic approach to disseminating disinformation.
The SSU continues to monitor and counteract such information operations, recently detaining an individual in Mykolaiv for allegedly directing Russian strikes against Ukrainian forces—demonstrating the sometimes lethal consequences of information warfare in the conflict zone.
As the war progresses, both Ukrainian authorities and international partners have increased resources dedicated to identifying and neutralizing disinformation campaigns, recognizing them as a significant threat to national security and social cohesion during wartime.
