Russia’s 2025 Drone Incident Quickly Reframed Through Disinformation, Expert Reveals

Russian disinformation operations moved with remarkable speed to reframe a 2025 airspace violation as a “Polish provocation,” according to research by political scientist Wojciech Kotowicz from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland.

Kotowicz detailed how Russian state media and coordinated online networks responded within hours when Russian drones entered Polish airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine on September 9-10, 2025. The incident demonstrates Moscow’s sophisticated real-time information warfare capabilities that transform events into opportunities to deflect attention from Russian aggression.

“Within literally hours of confirmation of the airspace violation, Russian state media, troll farms and coordinated bot networks launched a campaign aimed at shifting responsibility and portraying Poland as escalating the conflict,” Kotowicz explained.

The researcher identified two primary narratives pushed through pro-Kremlin channels. The first suggested the drone might have actually been Ukrainian, with Poland and Western allies falsely labeling it Russian to justify escalation and potentially draw NATO into direct confrontation with Moscow. Kotowicz characterized this claim as particularly cynical given that Russia was conducting extensive missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure at the time.

The second narrative acknowledged the drone might have been Russian but claimed its presence over Polish territory was merely a technical error or accidental course deviation. Within this framing, Poland’s defensive responses—including heightened military readiness and enhanced border monitoring—were portrayed as “hysterical” and “provocative” overreactions.

These tactics align with broader Russian information warfare patterns targeting Poland. Kotowicz noted that “every violation of Polish airspace, every border incident, every tension in Polish-Russian relations” is exploited to portray Poland as an “aggressor” and “provocateur” on the international stage.

Notably, Russia’s disinformation strategy isn’t primarily aimed at converting Poles to pro-Russian positions. Instead, Moscow seeks to sow “confusion,” erode trust in official information channels, amplify existing political divisions, and undermine national unity when facing security threats.

The researcher identified several recurring themes in Russian propaganda aimed at Poland: portraying the country as irrationally Russophobic, questioning Polish sovereignty by depicting it as merely a tool of American foreign policy, and promoting narratives about Polish territorial ambitions in western Ukraine—a calculated effort to drive wedges between Poles and Ukrainians.

Russian disinformation also attempts to exaggerate Poland’s economic challenges, attributing them solely to Warsaw’s support for Ukraine and participation in sanctions against Russia. Additionally, historical issues are weaponized to inflame tensions between Poland and its neighbors, painting the country as having revisionist territorial ambitions.

These carefully crafted messages target specific demographic groups, including farmers, business owners, and nationalist organizations. The ultimate objective, according to Kotowicz, is to discredit Poland’s standing as a regional leader in Eastern Europe and undermine its credibility as a NATO partner.

The findings stem from a comprehensive research project conducted at the University of Warmia and Mazury in 2024 titled “The impact of Russian disinformation on shaping public opinion in Eastern European countries: analysis and countermeasures.”

Security experts note that Russia’s current propaganda budget vastly exceeds what was allocated during the Soviet era. Combined with the global reach of internet platforms, smartphones, and social media networks, the Kremlin now possesses unprecedented capabilities to disseminate targeted messaging to millions of individuals almost instantaneously—making digital resilience and media literacy increasingly crucial components of national security.
