Pakistan’s Intelligence Agency Exploits Political Tensions in West Bengal, Officials Warn

Indian intelligence agencies have raised alarms over Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) attempting to capitalize on political instability in West Bengal through coordinated disinformation campaigns, according to security officials familiar with the matter.

The warning comes at a particularly sensitive time following the killing of Chandranath Rath, a close associate of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Tensions remain high across the state in the wake of a fiercely contested Assembly election that resulted in a decisive victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party over the incumbent Trinamool Congress.

“Intelligence agencies are monitoring the situation vigilantly,” said an official who requested anonymity due to security protocols. “Our intelligence gathering suggests ISI-backed elements, both within the state and across the border, are actively seeking to exploit the volatile situation. These elements thrive in such environments and attempt to escalate tensions to maintain instability across the state.”

An Intelligence Bureau official noted that West Bengal and India’s northeastern states have consistently featured in ISI’s strategic playbook. “While illegal immigration has been one tactic used by the ISI to alter demographics and trigger communal disharmony, they have also deployed operatives who specialize in exploiting political volatility,” the official explained.

The official further elaborated that although some incidents of violence stem from genuine political rivalries, many are being deliberately aggravated by external elements. “The ISI aims to run sophisticated disinformation campaigns to keep West Bengal in a state of unrest. Political violence, including bomb attacks, has unfortunately been a recurring feature in West Bengal’s political landscape, and ISI-backed elements are looking to exploit this reality.”

Security sources indicate the disinformation efforts will likely center around spreading false narratives regarding the new BJP government’s policies. With the BJP having campaigned on promises to address illegal immigration “with an iron fist,” officials anticipate that misinformation about immigration enforcement will be a primary focus of these campaigns.

“The next few months will be crucial for the state’s stability,” another intelligence official warned. “Some political factions have made baseless accusations that the BJP manipulated the election results, and foreign-backed elements will attempt to amplify these claims. Pakistan-based actors will be particularly active during this period, seeking to fully exploit the prevailing volatility.”

While the ISI coordinates ground operations, security agencies are particularly concerned about false information campaigns on social media platforms. Authorities are closely monitoring multiple social media accounts and chat groups to identify suspicious messaging related to West Bengal. “Social media and messaging platforms are where these pro-Pakistan elements will attempt to instigate unrest,” an official stated.

The ISI’s traditional strategy involved facilitating illegal immigration into West Bengal with the explicit goal of altering the demographic composition of the region. However, with the BJP’s pledge to address immigration issues, intelligence officials believe the ISI will pivot to utilizing existing assets within India to create false narratives, provoke communal tensions, and potentially orchestrate attacks.

The security concerns extend beyond West Bengal to encompass India’s northeastern states, where Pakistani intelligence has historically attempted to foment large-scale violence. These border regions hold significant strategic importance for national security.

“From a national security perspective, West Bengal and the northeastern states are critical regions. As border states, instability in these areas directly impacts the nation’s overall security posture,” explained a senior security official. “Our agencies remain on high alert to prevent adverse incidents and ensure that ISI-backed elements cannot successfully exploit the current political climate.”

Intelligence agencies have committed to maintaining enhanced surveillance measures to safeguard stability in the region and counter foreign interference in India’s domestic affairs.
