Russia Launches Targeted Disinformation Campaign Against Polish Military, Officials Warn

Russian operatives have escalated information warfare efforts against Poland, targeting military recruitment and reserve systems with coordinated propaganda designed to sow public distrust, according to a new analysis from Ukrainian security officials.

The Center for Countering Disinformation, operating under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), revealed that Russian campaigns are specifically targeting Polish citizens’ attitudes toward military service contracts and reserve obligations. The findings were published in a report shared through the Center’s official Telegram channel.

Security experts identified a pattern where Russia deliberately mischaracterizes standard Polish military administrative procedures. Regular reserve checks and military registration processes are being portrayed as threatening government overreach, creating unwarranted panic among Polish citizens.

“The propaganda deliberately twists routine administrative procedures into something sinister,” a spokesperson from the Center explained. “It creates the impression of a government acting against its own citizens’ interests.”

The disinformation narratives frequently employ vague messaging suggesting that “something concerning is happening” while implying that “the population is deliberately being kept in the dark.” This approach exploits existing anxieties and undermines trust in Polish institutions.

This latest campaign appears to be part of Russia’s broader strategy to weaken NATO’s eastern flank, where Poland serves as a critical ally for Ukraine and hosts significant military capabilities. By targeting civilian willingness to engage with military structures, Russia aims to undermine Poland’s defense readiness at a time of heightened regional tensions.

Military analysts note that public confidence in defense institutions represents a crucial component of national security. When citizens become reluctant to participate in reserve systems or military service due to manufactured fears, it can impact overall defense capabilities without a single shot being fired.

The timing coincides with Poland’s ongoing military modernization efforts, which include expanding its armed forces to 300,000 troops by 2035, making it one of Europe’s largest militaries. The country has also committed to spending approximately 4% of its GDP on defense in 2023, significantly above NATO’s 2% requirement.

“Russia’s goal is multifaceted,” noted a Polish security expert who requested anonymity. “They want to weaken citizens’ willingness to defend their country, damage trust between society and authorities, and create internal social tensions within a key Ukrainian ally.”

This isn’t Russia’s first attempt to manipulate Polish public opinion. In January, Ukrainian officials identified another Russian disinformation campaign designed to stoke anti-Ukrainian sentiment among Polish citizens. These operations frequently exploit existing societal divisions and historical tensions between the neighboring countries.

Poland has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, providing military aid, hosting refugees, and advocating for Ukrainian interests in international forums. This support makes Poland a logical target for Russian information operations.

Security officials emphasize that countering such campaigns requires media literacy and public awareness. Citizens are encouraged to verify information through multiple reliable sources, particularly when encountering emotionally charged content about military or security matters.

The Center for Countering Disinformation stressed that Russian information operations consistently aim to fragment allied societies from within, using sophisticated psychological tactics rather than conventional military threats.

As Russia continues to refine its disinformation strategies across Europe, security experts warn that similar campaigns are likely targeting other frontline NATO states. The effectiveness of these operations depends largely on public awareness and societal resilience to manipulation—factors that have become increasingly central to national security strategies throughout the region.
