Russia Accused of Planning Fake Memorials at Ukrainian Embassies to Spread Disinformation

Russian intelligence services are orchestrating staged memorials at Ukrainian embassies worldwide to spread disinformation about the 2014 Odessa events, according to Ukrainian security officials.

The Center for Countering Disinformation, operating under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, has issued warnings about an intensified propaganda campaign disguised as commemorations for “victims of May 2 in Odessa.” These coordinated actions are reportedly being prepared for implementation across multiple countries.

“Every year on May 2, the Russian propaganda machine revives one of its most cynical myths – the ‘atrocities of the Nazis in Odessa,'” the Center stated. “Under the guise of ‘honoring the memory of the victims of the tragedy,’ the Kremlin is preparing actions at Ukrainian embassies around the world.”

Security experts note that these demonstrations typically follow a predictable pattern: participants place flowers, display pro-Russian slogans, and provide pre-prepared “testimonies” to local media outlets. While Russia has employed similar tactics in previous years, officials have observed a significant increase in such activities for 2023.

The May 2, 2014 events in Odessa remain a sensitive and complex historical moment that occurred during Ukraine’s political upheaval following the Euromaidan protests. Clashes between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian groups resulted in a fire at the Trade Unions Building, where dozens of people died.
