Polish Railway Sabotage Blamed on Russia Amid Wave of Anti-Ukrainian Sentiment

An explosion on a railway track near the village of Mika on Sunday night damaged a crucial supply line carrying aid into Ukraine, in what Polish officials have described as a deliberate act of sabotage orchestrated by Russian intelligence.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed on Tuesday that two Ukrainian citizens working for Russia are suspected of executing the attack. “All facts point to a Russian trace,” Tusk stated during an official briefing on the incident.

Despite the government’s clear attribution of responsibility, an analysis by European research collective Res Futura Data House revealed a troubling trend in public discourse. After examining thousands of online comments about the incident, researchers found that 42% of people posting blamed Ukrainians for the sabotage, while only 24% attributed it to Russians. The remaining 19% suspected involvement from Polish state services.

“The largest number of comments suggest that people of Ukrainian origin are behind the incident,” Res Futura noted in a post on social media platform X. “These indications are often based on previous events, such as fires at facilities in Poland, vandalism or the presence of Ukrainians near strategic infrastructure.”

The proliferation of these false claims points to potential weaknesses in Poland’s information security apparatus. Res Futura suggested that the spread of disinformation may be linked to declining effectiveness of the country’s Internal Security Agency (ABW).

The incident occurs against a backdrop of rising tensions in the region, as Poland continues to serve as a critical gateway for Western military and humanitarian aid flowing into Ukraine. The railway line targeted in the attack represents a vital supply route in NATO’s support network for Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.

While addressing parliament, Prime Minister Tusk warned against the growing anti-Ukrainian sentiment being amplified online, which he characterized as serving Russian interests. “It is becoming increasingly easy to whip up anti-Ukrainian resentments for known reasons, as more and more Polish citizens are carrying the burden of the fact that we are hosting such a large number of refugees and migrants,” he said.

“From the point of view of Russian interests, the awakening of radically anti-Ukrainian emotions, disinformation of the type that Ukrainian drones are attacking Poland or that Ukrainians are blowing up trains, have a double value for Russian services,” Tusk added.

Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski echoed these concerns, advocating for solidarity with Ukraine and warning about Russia’s substantial investment in disinformation campaigns. “Russia spends billions on fuelling such sentiments, on disinformation and propaganda,” Sikorski wrote. “It wants to set a part of public opinion against our neighbors, against the EU and against refugees from Ukraine who have fled to Poland from Russian bombs.”

Despite these appeals from government officials, anti-Ukrainian rhetoric continues to gain traction among certain political figures in Poland. Grzegorz Braun, leader of the far-right Polish Crown Confederation party and Member of the European Parliament, described the explosion as “another anti-Polish provocation” that “warmongers are trying to use to escalate tensions.”

Sławomir Mentzen, another far-right leader, attempted to link the incident to broader migration concerns, writing: “They let in a Ukrainian who had been convicted of sabotage there and who has now blown up tracks in Poland. We cannot let everyone in. Poland must vet people who want to come to us!”

The Polish Ministry of Digitalisation has issued public warnings about the spread of disinformation regarding the railway explosion. “Disinformation activity conducted in the Russian and Polish infosphere has been identified since Sunday,” the ministry stated. “It is intended to redirect responsibility for the sabotage of the Polish railway lines to the Ukrainian side and to discredit the actions taken by the Polish services responsible for security.”

This incident highlights the dual front Poland faces: physical security threats to critical infrastructure and information warfare designed to sow discord between Poland and Ukraine – two countries whose cooperation remains essential to countering Russian influence in Eastern Europe.

As investigations continue, Polish authorities have increased security measures around critical infrastructure while working to counter the spread of disinformation that threatens to undermine Poland’s strategic position as a key supporter of Ukraine.
