Poland’s intelligence agencies have sounded the alarm over sophisticated disinformation campaigns using artificial intelligence that appear designed to undermine European Union unity and stability.
The Internal Security Agency (ABW) and the Foreign Intelligence Agency (AW) released a joint statement Tuesday highlighting a marked increase in coordinated online operations targeting Poland and other EU member states. These campaigns, which intelligence officials believe originate from hostile foreign actors, employ increasingly convincing AI-generated content to spread false narratives about sensitive political issues.
“We are observing a concerning pattern of targeted disinformation that goes beyond traditional fake news,” said Piotr Nowak, spokesperson for Poland’s intelligence community. “The use of advanced AI tools allows malicious actors to create highly convincing fake videos, audio clips, and written content that can rapidly spread across social media platforms before verification mechanisms catch up.”
The agencies report that these campaigns focus primarily on exploiting existing divisions within the European Union, particularly around contentious issues such as migration, energy policy, and security cooperation. Poland has emerged as a focal point for these operations due to its strategic position as an eastern EU border state and its increasingly prominent role in European defense initiatives.
Intelligence analysts have identified several recent examples, including manipulated videos appearing to show Polish officials making inflammatory statements about neighboring countries, and fabricated news reports suggesting Poland planned to withdraw from key EU economic agreements. These fake materials circulated widely on social media platforms before being flagged as misinformation.
“What makes this new wave of disinformation particularly dangerous is the sophistication of the content,” explained Dr. Marta Kowalska, a cybersecurity expert at the University of Warsaw. “Earlier generations of fake news were often easy to identify through poor grammar or obvious visual inconsistencies. AI-generated content can be nearly indistinguishable from genuine material, even to trained observers.”
The Polish government has requested emergency consultations with EU partners to develop a coordinated response. Poland’s Prime Minister emphasized that this threat extends beyond national borders and requires a unified European approach.
“These disinformation campaigns represent an attack on democratic processes across the entire European community,” the Prime Minister stated during a press conference in Warsaw. “Poland is taking the lead in calling for enhanced cooperation between member states’ intelligence services and tech companies to identify and counter these threats.”
The European Commission has acknowledged Poland’s concerns, with a spokesperson confirming that the issue will be discussed at the next meeting of the EU’s Rapid Alert System against Disinformation, scheduled for next week in Brussels.
Tech companies are also being called upon to strengthen their content verification processes. Representatives from major social media platforms have pledged to work more closely with European authorities to quickly identify and label AI-generated content, though critics argue these measures remain insufficient against increasingly sophisticated deception techniques.
The Polish intelligence warning comes amid heightened tensions across Eastern Europe, with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and associated geopolitical pressures creating fertile ground for information warfare. Security analysts suggest these disinformation campaigns may be part of a broader strategy to weaken European solidarity during a critical period.
“The timing is not coincidental,” noted Jan Kowalski, a senior analyst at the Warsaw Institute for Strategic Studies. “As Europe confronts multiple simultaneous challenges, from energy security to migration pressures, creating internal discord serves the interests of those who wish to see a fragmented rather than united European response.”
Polish authorities have launched a public awareness campaign to help citizens identify potential misinformation, while also establishing a dedicated task force to monitor and counter false narratives in real-time.
The Polish case highlights a growing challenge facing democracies worldwide, as artificial intelligence tools become more accessible and sophisticated. Experts warn that without coordinated international responses and improved technological safeguards, AI-powered disinformation could pose significant threats to electoral processes, international relations, and social cohesion in the coming years.

Kudos to the Polish intelligence agencies for sounding the alarm on this issue. Raising awareness and coordinating a unified EU response will be essential to safeguarding against these sophisticated influence operations.
The growing use of AI for disinformation highlights the importance of investing in digital security and resilience across the EU. Strengthening information verification and building public awareness will be key to mitigating these risks.
Well said. Protecting EU unity and stability from foreign interference should be a top priority for policymakers.
It’s troubling to see hostile foreign actors leverage AI to create convincing fake content and sow division within the EU. Vigilance and cooperation between member states will be crucial to combat these coordinated influence operations.
I agree. Safeguarding democratic processes and public discourse in the digital age requires robust fact-checking and media literacy efforts.
This is a complex challenge without easy solutions. But the EU must act decisively to stay ahead of hostile actors leveraging advanced technologies to undermine its cohesion.
Interesting to see Poland taking a lead on this issue. As a frontline EU member, they have a crucial role to play in identifying and countering these AI-driven disinformation campaigns.
The proliferation of AI-generated fake content is a major threat to democratic discourse. Strengthening media literacy and developing robust verification frameworks will be critical going forward.
Agreed. Combating disinformation requires a multifaceted approach involving both technological and educational solutions.
