Poland Calls for EU Investigation of TikTok Over Suspected Russian Disinformation

Polish authorities have formally asked the European Commission to investigate TikTok after discovering artificially generated content on the platform calling for Poland to leave the European Union, officials announced Tuesday.

The controversial TikTok profile, which has since disappeared from the platform, featured videos of young women dressed in Polish national colors urging Poland’s withdrawal from the EU. The content gained significant traction among Polish users before being removed.

Deputy Digitalization Minister Dariusz Standerski outlined Poland’s concerns in a letter to the European Commission, stating that the content “posed a threat to public order, information security and the integrity of democratic processes” not only in Poland but across the entire European Union.

Polish government representatives believe the disinformation campaign almost certainly originated in Russia, citing linguistic evidence in the recordings. “Analysis of the content revealed Russian syntax patterns in the dialogue, strongly suggesting foreign interference designed to destabilize Polish-EU relations,” a government spokesperson explained.

The request for investigation comes as EU member states face increasing challenges from foreign interference in elections and domestic politics. European security agencies have repeatedly warned about Russian-sponsored disinformation campaigns, espionage operations, and acts of sabotage targeting democratic institutions across the continent.

TikTok acknowledged the situation, stating it had been in contact with Polish authorities and had taken action to remove content violating its community standards. “We take the integrity of our platform very seriously and have removed the identified content that violated our policies against misinformation,” a TikTok representative said in a statement.

Neither the European Commission nor the Russian embassy in Warsaw has provided immediate responses to requests for comment on the Polish allegations.

This incident follows previous EU action against TikTok. Last year, the Commission opened formal proceedings against the ByteDance-owned platform over concerns it failed to adequately protect against election interference, particularly during Romania’s presidential election in November 2024.

Poland is specifically calling for the Commission to initiate proceedings under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which imposes strict content moderation requirements on large online platforms. The legislation, which came into full effect in 2023, requires Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) like TikTok to take robust measures against harmful content and misinformation.

Under DSA rules, companies found in breach of their obligations face potentially severe financial penalties – fines of up to 6 percent of their global annual turnover. For TikTok, whose parent company ByteDance reported revenues of approximately $110 billion in 2023, such penalties could amount to billions of dollars.

Digital rights experts note this case highlights the growing sophistication of AI-generated disinformation campaigns targeting democratic institutions. “What makes this particularly concerning is the use of advanced synthetic media to create seemingly authentic content designed specifically to undermine EU unity,” said Jana Novak, a cybersecurity analyst specializing in Eastern European information threats.

The incident occurs against the backdrop of increasing tension between Poland and Russia, with Warsaw being one of the most vocal European supporters of Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Polish officials have emphasized that this case demonstrates the urgent need for more rigorous content moderation on social media platforms, particularly regarding AI-generated material designed to influence public opinion and democratic processes.
