In an unusual display meant to counter online rumors, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared in a video at a Jerusalem café on Sunday, deliberately showing off his hands to prove he has the normal number of fingers – five on each hand.

The impromptu coffee shop video was Netanyahu’s response to bizarre conspiracy theories that began circulating last week after his Thursday video address to the Israeli public. Some social media users claimed the earlier footage showed Netanyahu with six fingers on one hand, fueling speculation that the prime minister was dead or seriously injured and had been replaced with an AI-generated deepfake.

In Sunday’s authenticated video, filmed at a café on the outskirts of Jerusalem, Netanyahu is seen ordering a takeaway coffee while engaging with an aide. After receiving his order, he deliberately holds up each hand, displaying five fingers, directly addressing the conspiracy theories circulating online.

When his aide mentions rumors of Netanyahu being killed or injured, the prime minister responds with a Hebrew pun on the word “dead,” which in slang can mean being “crazy about” something. “I’m crazy about coffee,” Netanyahu says. “You know what? I’m crazy about my people.”

The bizarre episode underscores the growing challenge of distinguishing fact from fiction in an era of increasingly sophisticated AI-generated content. The original rumors gained such traction that Iranian state media eventually reported on speculation about Netanyahu’s condition, amplifying the false narrative.

Fact-checkers have thoroughly debunked the six-finger claim. Newsweek examined clearer footage of the Thursday speech, confirming Netanyahu has the standard five fingers on his left hand. Online verification site Snopes determined social media users likely mistook the natural hypothenar eminence – a normal bulge at the base of the human pinky finger – for an extra digit.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran creating fertile ground for disinformation campaigns. Netanyahu’s Thursday address was particularly significant as it marked his first news conference since the outbreak of hostilities with Iran.

This case represents just one example of how AI-generated content is complicating the information landscape during international conflicts. Since U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran began last month, fabricated images and videos have proliferated across social media platforms, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary users to separate authentic content from sophisticated fakes.

In another recent example, a video purportedly showing Iranian missiles striking Tel Aviv garnered millions of views on X (formerly Twitter). Although the AI chatbot Grok incorrectly authenticated the footage, CBC’s fact-checking team definitively established it was fabricated.

The proliferation of such content has prompted concerns at the highest levels of government. U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday accused Iran of weaponizing artificial intelligence for disinformation purposes to misrepresent its wartime successes. Trump also made unsubstantiated claims that Western media outlets were working in “close co-ordination” with Iran to spread AI-generated “fake news.”

As AI technology continues to advance, distinguishing between authentic and fabricated content becomes increasingly challenging, even for sophisticated users. The Netanyahu finger-counting incident, while seemingly absurd, illustrates the very real challenges facing governments, media organizations, and citizens in navigating an information landscape where seeing is no longer necessarily believing.
