National Security Expert Returns to Key Biscayne to Discuss Combating Disinformation

Award-winning national security correspondent JJ Green is making a return visit to Key Biscayne this week to address the growing challenge of disinformation in today’s media landscape. Following a successful presentation in March that drew a capacity crowd, Green will speak at the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne on Thursday, April 23, at 6 p.m.

Green, who serves as the National Security Correspondent at WTOP Radio in Washington, D.C., will discuss his recent book, “The Noise War: How to Find the Truth When Everything Is Lying to You.” The presentation will take place in the Community Room adjacent to the police station by the Turtle Fountains at Village Hall.

“I’m honored and excited to return to Key Biscayne to speak to the Rotary Club to discuss The Noise War and a challenge that is becoming more urgent with each passing week: how to find truth, protect judgment, and stay grounded in an age of constant noise, manipulation, and misinformation,” Green told Islander News.

His book serves as what he calls a “field manual” designed for a broad audience—from students and professionals to civic leaders, retirees, and everyday citizens. It offers practical guidance on identifying fake news and finding clarity in an increasingly polarized information environment. Green characterizes disinformation as a “weapon of mass destruction” in today’s digital age.

The timeliness of Green’s work cannot be overstated. As social media platforms continue to struggle with content moderation and foreign influence operations become more sophisticated, the ability to discern fact from fiction has become an essential skill for informed citizenship. Recent studies from the Pew Research Center indicate that approximately 64% of Americans say fabricated news stories cause “a great deal of confusion” about basic facts.

Green brings substantial credibility to the topic. Since joining WTOP in 2004, he has traveled to more than 55 countries and embedded with U.S. military forces in multiple war zones. This frontline experience has given him unique insights into how information warfare operates in conflict situations—knowledge he now applies to the domestic information ecosystem.

Beyond his work on disinformation, Green hosts the podcast “Colors: A Dialogue on Race in America,” which explores challenging conversations about identity and social cohesion in the United States. The podcast recently received recognition for its impact, winning the 2025 Belva Davis Award from SAG-AFTRA for contributions to racial equality and social justice.

Green’s March appearance in Key Biscayne filled the Lighthouse Room at the Community Center to capacity. Attendees engaged with his presentation on information literacy and participated in a question-and-answer session that explored practical applications of his research.

The Rotary Club of Key Biscayne, which is hosting Thursday’s event, has positioned this presentation as part of their ongoing commitment to public education and community engagement. The timing coincides with increasing national attention on the role of information integrity in democratic processes, particularly as the United States approaches another election cycle.

Space for the Thursday talk is limited, and interested attendees must RSVP by emailing Kasaromano@gmail.com or pamgordon.2218@me.com, or by calling (305) 496-3456. There is a $20 fee for attending the meeting. Copies of Green’s book will be available for purchase at the event.

“There could not be a more timely conversation,” Green remarked about his upcoming presentation, highlighting the growing urgency of information literacy in today’s media environment.
