As the car sped away, it was pursued by an angry mob that eventually caught up with it at Thinungei. The windows were smashed, and though the driver—identified as Pangal—managed to escape, a military officer remained behind and identified himself as belonging to Assam Rifles. Despite clarifications from witnesses that there were no armed Kukis in the vehicle, the mob brutally assaulted the officer.
“I did not see any Kukis in the car,” reported a journalist who witnessed the incident. “The officer, bleeding from injuries to his face, also stated there were no Kukis traveling with him.”
The Manipur police later issued a statement explaining that the vehicle contained security personnel pursuing leads after a drug bust. State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam described the violence as stemming from a “misunderstanding” between the public and security forces. Four individuals were subsequently arrested for allegedly inciting the violence.
This incident follows heightened tensions in the region after an April 7 explosion in Tronglaobi killed two Meitei children. The National Investigation Agency has arrested three United Kuki National Army cadres in connection with the attack, though investigations into potential local involvement continue.
The aftermath of the explosion had already triggered confrontations between civilians and security forces. Disinformation claiming that security personnel were harboring those responsible for the bombing led to attacks on Central Reserve Police Force camps, including an attempt to loot an armory. When CRPF personnel opened fire during one such attack, three civilians were killed, further inflaming tensions throughout the Valley districts.
Security experts point to organized efforts to destabilize the region. Sources within the government identified Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei militia that rose to prominence after May 2023, as actively mobilizing around the Tronglaobi killings. The group, allegedly controlled by former Chief Minister Biren Singh and MP Sanajaoba, has been instructing supporters to set up barricades, organize rallies, and enforce shutdowns—actions that security forces believe aim to discredit the current administration.
“The manner in which the explosion was carried out in Tronglaobi minimized the possibility of Kuki insurgent groups being involved,” a security official stated, suggesting more complex local dynamics at play.
The incident exposes the stark contrast between Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s peace initiatives and ground realities. Despite the Chief Minister’s recent journey through the Kuki district of Kangpokpi, where he urged communities to “forget what has happened and travel across the State freely,” the Thinungei attack demonstrates that deep animosities persist.
