Israel Accused of Disinformation Campaign Over Humanitarian Flotilla Interception

The Palestinian Information Center (CIP) has issued a strong rebuke against the Israeli Embassy in Chile, accusing it of spreading disinformation to justify the interception and detention of civilians aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla.

In a detailed statement released this week, the CIP condemned both the embassy and the Chilean Jewish Community for making what they described as “false accusations” against the flotilla participants. According to the CIP, these allegations are part of a “misleading narrative that stigmatizes and contributes to justifying actions against civilians who sail unarmed on a humanitarian mission.”

The controversy stems from an incident in international waters where Israeli forces intercepted 22 vessels from the flotilla approximately 80 nautical miles west of Crete. The ships were en route to Gaza with humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians. During the operation, Israeli forces detained 175 civilians, including Chilean journalist Macarena Chahuán, who were reportedly taken aboard the Israeli ship Nahshon.

Multiple testimonies suggest the detainees experienced physical and verbal abuse during their capture and subsequent detention. The CIP specifically highlighted the cases of activists Thiago Ávila and Saif Abukeshek, who allegedly endured “torture, medical negligence, and degrading abuse.” An Israeli court has extended their detention until May 5, despite no formal charges being filed against them.

The humanitarian mission had been organized to deliver aid to Gaza amid ongoing conflict in the region, which has created severe humanitarian challenges for the civilian population. The flotilla organizers have consistently maintained that their mission was purely humanitarian and civilian in nature.

Legal experts note that the interception of vessels in international waters raises significant questions under maritime law. The CIP emphasized that such actions potentially violate the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which guarantees freedom of navigation on the high seas. The organization also argued that the detention of flotilla participants may contravene international humanitarian law protecting civilians and the prohibition of collective punishment established in the Fourth Geneva Convention.

“The recurrence of these events, accompanied by declarations that seek to justify them, solidifies a framework of impunity sustained by disinformation and the normalization of violence against civilians,” the CIP statement read. “The discrediting of the flotilla shifts attention away from ongoing violations and contributes to their continuation.”

The organization has called on Chilean authorities and the international community to demand strict adherence to international law, emphasizing that “the protection of civilians does not admit self-serving interpretations or narratives that conceal abuses.”

This incident occurs against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the region and increasing international concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla represents one of several civilian initiatives attempting to break the blockade on Gaza, which has been in place since 2007.

Israeli authorities have consistently defended their blockade and interception of vessels attempting to reach Gaza as necessary security measures. However, humanitarian organizations and several international bodies have criticized the blockade’s impact on civilian life in the enclave.

The diplomatic dispute between the CIP and the Israeli Embassy in Chile highlights the increasingly polarized international discourse surrounding the conflict, with competing narratives about humanitarian missions, security concerns, and international law continuing to shape global public opinion on the issue.

As of this report, neither the Israeli Embassy in Chile nor representatives of the Chilean Jewish Community have responded to the CIP’s latest statement.
