Palestinian Information Center Accuses Israeli Embassy of Disinformation Regarding Flotilla Interception

The Palestinian Information Center (CIP) has launched strong accusations against the Israeli Embassy in Chile, claiming it is using disinformation tactics to cover up what they describe as the kidnapping of civilians from the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters.

According to a statement issued by the CIP, both the Israeli diplomatic mission in Chile and the Chilean Jewish Community have made false accusations against the flotilla participants, creating a narrative that “stigmatizes and contributes to justifying actions against civilians who sail unarmed on a humanitarian mission.”

The controversy centers on an incident where Israeli forces intercepted 22 vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters, approximately 80 nautical miles west of Crete. The flotilla was reportedly en route to Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians amid ongoing conflict in the region. During the interception, Israeli forces allegedly detained 175 civilians, including Chilean journalist Macarena Chahuán, who were taken aboard the Israeli vessel Nahshon.

The CIP statement claims these detained individuals suffered physical and verbal abuse while in custody. The organization argues that Israel’s claims about the flotilla conducting covert operations represent a deliberate attempt to criminalize humanitarian activists and divert attention from what occurred in international waters.

“The flotilla corresponds to a civil and unarmed mission aimed at highlighting the prolonged blockade of Gaza,” the CIP emphasized in its statement, rejecting characterizations of the mission as anything other than humanitarian in nature.

From a legal standpoint, the Palestinian group contends that Israel’s actions constitute clear violations of international law, specifically citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which guarantees freedom of navigation on the high seas. The CIP further argues that these actions violate international humanitarian law protecting civilians and contravene “the prohibition of collective punishment established in the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

The statement highlights specific allegations of mistreatment during detention, particularly the cases of activists Thiago Ávila and Saif Abukeshek, who reportedly endured “torture, medical negligence, and degrading abuse during their capture.” According to the CIP, these practices mirror treatment that international human rights organizations have documented for decades regarding the Palestinian population.

In a recent development, an Israeli court ordered the continued detention of Ávila and Abukeshek until May 5, despite no formal charges being filed against them. This judicial decision has further fueled concerns about potential human rights violations in the case.

The CIP has characterized Israel’s response to the flotilla as part of a broader pattern, stating that “the recurrence of these events, accompanied by declarations that seek to justify them, solidifies a framework of impunity sustained by disinformation and the normalization of violence against civilians.”

The organization concluded its statement with a call to Chilean authorities and the international community to demand strict adherence to international law in this case, emphasizing that “the protection of civilians does not admit self-serving interpretations or narratives that conceal abuses.”

This incident occurs against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Gaza Strip, where humanitarian concerns have grown significantly since the outbreak of conflict in October 2023. International aid organizations have consistently warned about deteriorating conditions for civilians in Gaza, with limited access to essential supplies including food, medicine, and clean water.

The interception of humanitarian flotillas attempting to reach Gaza has historical precedent, with the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla raid resulting in nine activists killed when Israeli commandos boarded vessels in a similar operation. That incident sparked international condemnation and led to diplomatic tensions between Israel and several countries.
