ICPC Denounces Viral AI-Generated Video Alleging ₦50 Billion Bribery Scandal
Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has vehemently rejected claims made in a widely circulated video alleging a ₦50 billion bribery scandal, calling the content “false, misleading, and partly generated using artificial intelligence.”
In an official statement released on Monday, the anti-corruption agency emphasized that the viral content bears no relationship to any ongoing operations or investigations conducted by the commission, and urged the public to disregard the video in its entirety.
ICPC spokesperson J. Okor Odey clarified that all elements of the video—including individuals featured, allegations made, and visual materials presented—were fabricated with the apparent intent to deceive viewers and undermine the agency’s reputation.
“The content being circulated is entirely false. The images, names, and narratives presented are manufactured and, in some cases, AI-generated to mislead the public,” Odey stated in the commission’s official response.
The anti-graft body took special care to address specific elements of the fabricated claims, emphasizing that it is not conducting any investigation involving Senior Advocates of Nigeria, legal practitioners, or members of the judiciary in connection with the purported ₦50 billion bribery scheme mentioned in the video.
“For clarity, no such case, transaction, or investigation exists within the records of the commission,” the statement firmly declared.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about the proliferation of AI-generated disinformation targeting government institutions in Nigeria. The country has witnessed an uptick in sophisticated digital misinformation campaigns in recent months, particularly those aimed at regulatory and anti-corruption agencies.
The ICPC, established in 2000 to combat corruption in Nigeria’s public sector, has frequently found itself battling not just corruption but also disinformation about its operations. Security analysts note that fabricated corruption allegations are increasingly being used to undermine public confidence in anti-graft agencies and potentially interfere with legitimate investigations.
In its statement, the commission issued a stern warning to those behind the creation and distribution of the false content, demanding an immediate cessation of these activities. The agency also indicated its readiness to pursue legal action against individuals found responsible for creating or spreading the misinformation.
“The commission will not hesitate to take appropriate legal measures against those responsible for this deliberate attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the image of the ICPC,” a portion of the statement read.
Digital rights experts have pointed out that the incident highlights the growing challenge of AI-generated content in Nigeria’s information ecosystem. The technology makes it increasingly difficult for the average citizen to distinguish between authentic and fabricated content, especially when it appears convincing and aligns with existing narratives about corruption in government circles.
The commission further cautioned Nigerians about the dangers of the emerging trend of sophisticated misinformation disguised as legitimate digital content. It reaffirmed its institutional commitment to transparency and evidence-based investigations, urging citizens to rely exclusively on the ICPC’s official communication channels for accurate information about its activities.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with actual corruption cases across various sectors of government, the ICPC emphasized that disinformation only hampers genuine anti-corruption efforts and diverts public attention from substantive issues requiring scrutiny.
The agency concluded its statement by encouraging Nigerians to practice digital literacy and verify information before sharing potentially misleading content on social media platforms, where such fabricated videos typically gain traction.
