In Georgia, accusations of “revolutionary scenarios” continue to escalate as pro-government media outlets allege that opposition groups are planning political unrest ahead of upcoming elections. This marks another chapter in the ongoing political tension that has characterized Georgian politics in recent years.

According to the pro-government television channel Imedi, Ihor Blazhevych from the Prague Civil Society Centre has been implicated in organizing anti-government activities. The broadcaster claims that Georgian special services have obtained intelligence regarding “upcoming unrest,” purportedly corroborated by information from foreign intelligence partners.

Imedi’s report specifically alleges that Blazhevych conducted training sessions with opposition figures in recent days, providing what they described as “instructions” for coordinated action. The channel further claimed that Blazhevych directed Pirveli TV, an opposition-aligned media outlet, to disseminate information about anticipated changes in the government structure, suggesting a coordinated media campaign to destabilize the current administration.

Opposition media have vehemently rejected these allegations. Pirveli TV issued a strong denial, characterizing the accusations as “lies and disinformation.” The channel also noted that Imedi journalists made no attempt to contact them for comment before broadcasting these claims, raising questions about journalistic standards and due diligence.

In its response, Pirveli TV highlighted that Imedi operates under United Kingdom sanctions for allegedly “spreading Russian propaganda,” using this point to undermine the credibility of the accusations. The opposition channel has called on Georgia’s National Communications Commission to intervene, demanding both a cessation of what they view as deliberate misinformation and an opportunity to present their position through Imedi’s platform.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, a prominent figure in the ruling Georgian Dream party, weighed in on the controversy, claiming that “coup attempts” financed by “external interference” have been a recurring issue in Georgia’s political landscape. Kaladze suggested that these alleged foreign-backed efforts have deepened societal polarization, while asserting that such destabilization attempts continue to the present day.

The accusations come amid growing concerns about Georgia’s democratic trajectory and its geopolitical orientation. The country recently appeared on a list of nations considered “friendly” to Russia, with its “rating” reportedly increasing in Russian assessments. This development has alarmed pro-Western Georgian citizens and international observers, who have expressed concern about the ruling party’s apparent drift toward Moscow despite the country’s official Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

Georgia’s political environment has grown increasingly tense since 2020, when opposition parties accused the government of electoral fraud. The situation deteriorated further in 2023 with the controversial passage of a “foreign agents” law, which critics compared to similar legislation used in Russia to suppress civil society. The law sparked large-scale protests in Tbilisi and drew sharp criticism from the European Union and the United States.

As Georgia approaches parliamentary elections scheduled for October 2024, both domestic and international observers anticipate increased political tension. The European Union, which granted Georgia candidate status in December 2023 despite concerns about democratic backsliding, continues to monitor developments closely.

Analysts suggest that accusations of revolutionary scenarios and foreign interference have become standard political tactics employed by the Georgian government to discredit opposition voices and justify potential crackdowns on dissent. Meanwhile, civil society organizations continue to express concern about shrinking democratic space in what was once considered a beacon of democratic reform in the post-Soviet region.

Interesting allegations from the Georgian authorities. It’s concerning to see political tensions escalating ahead of elections. I wonder if there’s any credible evidence to support these claims of a ‘revolutionary scenario’ or if it’s just posturing and political rhetoric.
