French Navy Debunks Pakistani Media Claims About Indian Rafale Jets

The French Navy has issued a strong rebuttal against claims made by Pakistan’s Geo TV and journalist Hamid Mir regarding an alleged Indian military setback during tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The Pakistani media outlets had claimed that a French naval commander confirmed Pakistan’s air superiority and the downing of Indian Rafale fighter jets.

In a direct response on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the French Navy categorically dismissed the reports as “fake news,” sharing screenshots of the articles in question. The naval authority stated that the reports contained “extensive misinformation and disinformation” and emphasized that statements attributed to Captain Launay were fabricated without his consent for publication.

“When asked about Operation Sindoor, Captain Launay neither confirmed nor denied any claims about losses,” the French Navy clarified. They further noted that the captain refused to comment on allegations about Chinese jamming of Indian aircraft and “never mentioned the Chinese J-10,” contradicting a central claim in the Pakistani media narrative.

This incident appears to be part of a larger disinformation campaign targeting India’s military capabilities and defense acquisitions. A recent report from the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission revealed that China launched a coordinated disinformation effort surrounding “Operation Sindoor,” utilizing fake social media accounts to disseminate AI-generated images purporting to show debris from downed aircraft.

According to the Commission’s findings, the Chinese campaign had clear commercial motivations, aiming to “prevent sales of French Rafale aircraft in favour of its own J-35s.” The report indicated that Beijing “opportunistically” exploited tensions between India and Pakistan to showcase its weapons technology, attempting to capitalize on its ongoing border disputes with India while simultaneously advancing its defense industry objectives.

The fabricated narrative about Rafale jets being shot down carries significant implications for regional security dynamics and international defense markets. The Rafale is a cornerstone of India’s air defense modernization program, with the country having purchased 36 of the advanced French-made fighters in a deal worth approximately $8.7 billion. India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has responded forcefully to the disinformation campaign. BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya condemned what he described as a “desperate misinformation campaign” by Pakistan to discredit both Operation Sindoor and India’s Rafale fleet. Malviya specifically criticized Pakistani correspondent Hamid Mir for repeatedly circulating fabricated claims regarding the Rafale jets and an alleged May conflict.

“When official institutions start debunking their propaganda, you know how desperate Pakistan’s misinformation machinery has become,” the BJP stated. The party also suggested that Mir maintains connections with several Indian journalists, though it did not name specific individuals.
