In a strongly worded statement, the French Navy has categorically refuted claims made by Pakistani media regarding India’s alleged air inferiority during the May 2025 conflict, according to India Today.

The controversy erupted when Pakistan’s Geo TV published a report claiming that French commander Captain Jaquis Launay had confirmed Pakistan’s air superiority over India during Operation Sindoor. The Pakistani outlet further alleged that the Pakistan Air Force was “better prepared” than its Indian counterpart and suggested that India’s loss of Rafale jets was unrelated to any technological advantages of Pakistan’s Chinese-made J-10C aircraft.

French military officials swiftly denounced these claims as “extensive misinformation and disinformation,” emphasizing that Captain Launay had never authorized any such statements. The French Navy’s unequivocal rejection labeled the Pakistani report as “fake news,” effectively discrediting the entire narrative presented by Geo TV.

“The remarks wrongly attributed to Captain Launay contain extensive misinformation and disinformation,” the French Navy stated in its response, leaving no room for ambiguity regarding the fabricated nature of the claims.

The incident has sparked significant backlash across social media platforms, with many critics characterizing it as part of a broader pattern of anti-India propaganda from Pakistani media outlets. BJP leader Amit Malviya was among those who condemned the false reporting, specifically calling out Geo TV correspondent Hamid Mir.

“The French Navy has called out Pakistan’s Geo TV and its correspondent Hamid Mir for spreading misinformation and disinformation,” Malviya stated. “In his report, Hamid Mir peddled the same old, fabricated claims about Rafales and the so-called May conflict and has now been publicly exposed. When official institutions start debunking their propaganda, you know how desperate Pakistan’s misinformation machinery has become.”

The context behind this media controversy dates back to May 2025, when India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, primarily tourists. The operation reportedly resulted in significant losses for Pakistani forces before both countries agreed to a ceasefire at Pakistan’s request.

This incident highlights the ongoing media tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, where military capabilities and operational successes remain highly contested subjects. The Rafale fighter jets, manufactured by France’s Dassault Aviation, have been a particularly sensitive topic since India acquired 36 of these advanced multi-role combat aircraft in a deal worth approximately €7.8 billion.

Defense analysts note that false claims about military hardware performance have become increasingly common in the information warfare between India and Pakistan. The French Navy’s intervention in this case is unusual, as foreign military establishments typically avoid direct involvement in South Asian media disputes.

Media experts point out that verification challenges in conflict reporting often create space for nationalistic narratives that may diverge significantly from operational realities. The immediate and explicit denial from the French Navy represents a significant blow to the credibility of the Pakistani claims.

As tensions continue to simmer between India and Pakistan, military observers emphasize the importance of factual reporting on defense matters, particularly regarding the capabilities and performance of advanced weapons systems like the Rafale jets, which represent substantial investments in national security infrastructure.

Neither Geo TV nor Hamid Mir has publicly responded to the French Navy’s rejection of their reporting as of this writing.
