EC to Monitor Disinformation During 7-Day Poll Period

Bangladesh’s Election Commission announced plans today to establish a specialized monitoring cell aimed at combating disinformation and maintaining law and order during the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) election and referendum.

According to a circular issued by the Election Commission (EC), the monitoring cell will operate for a seven-day period spanning the electoral process – four days before polling day, election day itself, and two days following the vote. The initiative underscores the EC’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral environment free from the influence of false information.

The cell will draw representatives from various government bodies, including the Election Commission, relevant ministries and divisions, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), and other pertinent forces and agencies. While initially starting with limited personnel, the cell will operate at full capacity during the critical week-long voting period.

“Utmost importance has been placed on maintaining a peaceful and normal law and order situation to ensure the free, fair and peaceful conduct of the election,” the EC circular stated.

To effectively counter disinformation, the monitoring cell will receive technical support from technologically capable forces and agencies. This collaborative approach aims to quickly identify and address false information that could potentially disrupt the electoral process or mislead voters.
