Dutch public broadcaster NOS has announced it will no longer post content on Elon Musk’s social media platform X, citing concerns over the spread of disinformation and hateful content. The state-funded news organization made the announcement on Tuesday, becoming one of the few major media outlets to completely abandon the platform.

“The platform no longer fits our vision on how we want to present news on social media,” NOS stated in its announcement. “The amount of hateful responses and disinformation on X is large and unrestricted. Also under our own messages, making us unintentionally help spread them.”

The decision represents a significant move for the broadcaster, whose main account had amassed approximately 2.4 million followers on X. Despite withdrawing from Musk’s platform, NOS confirmed it will maintain its presence on other social media channels, including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp.

X did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding NOS’s departure.

The Dutch broadcaster’s exit highlights growing tensions between traditional media organizations and X since Musk acquired the platform, formerly known as Twitter, in 2022 for $44 billion. Under Musk’s leadership, X has faced persistent criticism for its approach to content moderation, which many describe as too permissive.

Critics argue that Musk’s self-described “free speech absolutist” stance has allowed misinformation and hate speech to flourish unchecked on the platform. The billionaire owner has defended his approach as protecting freedom of expression, but detractors point to a noticeable increase in problematic content since his takeover.

Despite widespread concerns about X’s content policies, relatively few major media organizations have taken the decisive step of abandoning the platform entirely. The Guardian, a prominent British newspaper, ceased posting on X approximately a year ago, specifically citing “disturbing content” including racism and conspiracy theories as its reason for departure. Similarly, U.S. National Public Radio (NPR) stopped posting on the platform in April 2023.

NOS’s decision comes amid a broader debate about social media’s role in news dissemination and the responsibilities of platforms to moderate content. Traditional media outlets increasingly find themselves navigating a complex landscape where audience reach must be balanced against concerns about associating with platforms that may undermine journalistic standards.

For news organizations, presence on major social platforms like X has traditionally provided crucial distribution channels to reach audiences. However, the evolution of these spaces under different ownership and moderation philosophies has prompted media outlets to reassess their participation.

The departure of established news sources like NOS from X could potentially accelerate the platform’s transformation from a news-centric medium to one more focused on opinion and entertainment. This shift would have implications for how information circulates online and could further fragment the digital media environment.

European media organizations have been particularly vocal about content moderation concerns, operating in a regulatory environment where the European Union has implemented stricter rules around digital content through measures like the Digital Services Act.

As media organizations continue to evaluate their relationship with various platforms, NOS’s decision may prompt other news outlets to reconsider their own social media strategies and presence on X specifically. The move underscores the ongoing tension between maximizing audience reach and upholding journalistic values in an increasingly polarized digital landscape.

X continues to face scrutiny not only from media organizations but also from advertisers and regulators concerned about content moderation policies under Musk’s leadership.
