A Christian forum in Nagaland has strongly denied false claims circulating on social media regarding a recent peace meeting between ethnic communities in the state’s capital.

The Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) issued an official statement refuting reports that a participant had walked out of their May 4 meeting in Kohima, which brought together representatives from the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities. The forum labeled the social media news flash as “totally false.”

“At no point did Sword Vashum walk out of the meeting, as alleged in the circulated news,” clarified NJCF President Rev Dr N Paphino, Vice President Rev Dr Vevo Phesao, and Church Coordinator and Relation Rev Dr Hotokhu P Zhimomi in their joint statement.

The NJCF explained that the gathering was convened at their invitation and was well-attended by church leaders and civil representatives from both communities. The statement emphasized that all participants, along with the NJCF, stand as witnesses to what actually transpired during the meeting.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of longstanding tensions in Northeast India, where ethnic conflicts have historically complicated relations between various communities. The Kuki and Naga communities have experienced periods of strained relations, particularly in border areas of Manipur and Nagaland.

The forum expressed concern that such misinformation could undermine ongoing peace efforts in the region. “Such disinformation undermines the spirit of dialogue and reconciliation,” the NJCF statement noted, highlighting the potentially damaging impact of false reporting on delicate inter-community relations.

Nagaland, a predominantly Christian state in India’s Northeast, has relied heavily on faith-based organizations like the NJCF to mediate conflicts and build bridges between different ethnic groups. Christian forums have historically played crucial roles in peace-building initiatives across the region.

The May 4 meeting represents one of several recent attempts by religious and civil society groups to address tensions that occasionally flare up between communities in the Northeast. These efforts have become increasingly important as the region seeks to overcome historical conflicts and focus on development.

In their statement, the NJCF took the opportunity to make a broader appeal for peace, calling “upon all Kukis and Nagas to cease from all forms of violent confrontation and to give peace a chance.” This appeal resonates in a region that has witnessed intermittent ethnic conflicts over territorial disputes and political representation.

“Peace is the only way forward,” the NJCF affirmed, underscoring the forum’s commitment to fostering unity and understanding among different communities in the state.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in conflict-sensitive regions, where false reports can quickly inflame tensions and undermine painstaking reconciliation efforts. Social media platforms have amplified this challenge, allowing unverified information to spread rapidly before corrections can be issued.

Religious leaders across Northeast India have increasingly spoken out about the responsibility of media users and platforms to verify information before sharing, particularly when it involves sensitive inter-community matters.

The NJCF’s prompt response to the false claims demonstrates the vigilance with which peace-building organizations must now monitor information flows to protect fragile dialogue processes from being derailed by misinformation.

As Nagaland continues to work toward lasting peace and development, the role of religious forums like the NJCF in facilitating honest dialogue and dispelling harmful rumors remains vital to the state’s social cohesion.
