During the second day of Climate Week NYC, city leaders from around the globe continued demonstrating significant progress in climate action initiatives, reinforcing the critical role urban areas play in addressing climate change despite resistance at national levels.

A notable highlight of the day was the celebration of a new strategic partnership between C40 Cities and the Ramboll Foundation. C40 Co-Chair and Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr joined C40 Cities Executive Director Mark Watts and Søren Nielsen from the Ramboll Foundation to mark this collaboration. The partnership represents a significant vote of confidence in resilient urban development during challenging political times, with Ramboll providing unrestricted funding to C40 Cities.

Building upon a long-established relationship with the Ramboll Group, this collaboration aims to help cities integrate resilience and climate adaptation into their long-term planning, governance structures, and policy frameworks. The partnership comes at a crucial time when cities face increasing climate-related challenges requiring comprehensive solutions.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, who serves on the C40 Cities Steering Committee, participated in a panel discussion titled “Betting on a Breakthrough – Where Should the Smart Money Go Now?” at The Climate Group Hub. Joined by representatives from The Economist, RMI, Amalgamated Bank, and BCG, Mayor Gallego emphasized the pivotal role cities play in directing climate investments.

“Cities are where climate risks hit hardest, but they’re also where so much innovation starts – from transit to infrastructure,” Mayor Gallego stated, highlighting the dual nature of urban areas as both vulnerability hotspots and innovation centers.

While cities are already investing in adaptation and resilience measures, they cannot tackle these challenges alone. Achieving global climate objectives requires directing substantially more public and private financing toward city-led solutions that protect communities, generate employment, and mitigate long-term risks.

The future of clean transportation was another key topic addressed during the event. London’s Deputy Mayor Mete Coban, who also serves as a C40 Board Member, participated in discussions about transforming urban mobility systems. Coban showcased London’s tangible achievements in expanding electric vehicle access and reimagining local transportation networks.

Despite progress, Coban acknowledged the significant challenges ahead, calling for accelerated action from national governments, enhanced support for local authorities, and greater focus on equity to ensure the benefits of transportation transitions reach all community members. The message was clear: while the clean transport revolution is underway, overcoming remaining obstacles requires bold leadership, cross-sector collaboration, and commitment to systemic change.

Climate disinformation emerged as another critical challenge being addressed during the event. At the Solutions Dialogue on Information Integrity, C40’s Director of Political Strategy and Campaigns, Donna Hume, discussed the growing threat that disinformation poses to effective climate action. The session showcased best practices for combating false information, evidence-based policy interventions, and strategies to accelerate initiatives aligned with Paris Agreement goals.

These discussions on disinformation and information integrity will continue at the Secretary-General’s Special High-level Event on Climate Action, building momentum toward COP30.

As global challenges intensify, cities are increasingly stepping into leadership roles. From reducing fossil fuel dependence and scaling up clean energy to creating sustainable jobs and protecting vulnerable communities, urban leaders are demonstrating what can be achieved when ambitious climate goals are matched with decisive action.

Climate Week NYC continues to serve as a platform highlighting the pivotal role cities play in global climate initiatives, especially when national leadership falters or actively works against climate progress. The event underscores how mayors and local officials, who witness climate impacts in their communities firsthand, are implementing practical solutions despite political headwinds at higher levels of government.
