Global Disinformation Campaign Threatens Climate Action and Democracy, Security Experts Warn

A sophisticated global disinformation effort costing up to $7 billion annually is actively undermining climate action while eroding democratic institutions, according to a stark new security analysis from prominent military and defense experts.

The Australian Security Leaders Climate Group (ASLCG), led by former Australian Chief of Defence Admiral Chris Barrie, has released a report characterizing these coordinated misinformation campaigns as a form of warfare against humanity that threatens global security.

“Over the last two decades, anti-climate action propaganda and disinformation networks have grown into multi-billion dollar permanent campaigns that run across the entire information ecosystem,” the report states. Unlike conventional military threats, this campaign operates through strategic manipulation of information channels, combining traditional media influence with coordinated online activities and algorithmic amplification.

The ASLCG argues that global heating represents a more significant security threat than traditional military concerns, yet many defense establishments remain trapped in outdated 20th-century conflict models that fail to address these existential dangers.

“Power in this digitally networked age comes from dominance in the information space,” the report explains, noting that we now live “in a world increasingly shaped by propaganda and disinformation rather than factual information.”

The strategic objective extends beyond merely blocking climate initiatives. According to the analysis, these campaigns seek “to degrade the information environment itself, creating confusion, mistrust and institutional delegitimisation that weaken democratic decision making on complex issues including climate and energy.”

The disinformation strategy employs multiple channels, including think tanks, PR companies, broadcast networks, social media platforms, and high-profile “influencers.” To maximize impact, these campaigns intentionally blend anti-climate-action messaging with other divisive themes, including anti-immigration, anti-democracy, anti-science, and anti-government narratives.

The security implications are profound, with the ASLCG describing climate disinformation as evolving from a mere communications issue into a genuine national security challenge affecting “sovereignty, economic resilience, disaster readiness, institutional trust, and strategic autonomy in shaping the energy transition.”

Before the Trump administration, the U.S. defense establishment had openly acknowledged global heating as a major threat to national and international security. However, these warnings have since been suppressed as the Pentagon and other government departments were prohibited from addressing climate issues and ordered to cancel related research initiatives. This policy shift coincided with broader efforts to increase fossil fuel use while discouraging renewable energy development.

The human cost is already devastating. Climate-related deaths, estimated at several million annually worldwide, are expected to rise dramatically as global temperatures increase. These fatalities stem from floods, fires, famines, heat waves, and storms. Additional deaths linked to petrochemical products—including air pollution, water contamination, and toxic chemicals in consumer goods—compound this toll.

World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Gebreyesus has been unequivocal: “The continued expansion of the use of fossil fuels is a death sentence to millions. There is no excuse for persistent delay in climate action.”

The ASLCG has proposed several countermeasures, including stronger anti-trust laws and tighter regulation of AI and social media platforms. However, these national-level solutions face implementation challenges across 197 countries worldwide, potentially allowing disinformation spreaders to exploit regulatory gaps.

In his book “The Age of Lies,” author Julian Cribb warned that disinformation may represent the greatest threat to humanity by corrupting public discourse and rational decision-making. His follow-up work, “How to Fix a Broken Planet,” advocates for a World Truth Commission to expose deliberate falsehoods and a World Integrity Service to rate information sources based on accuracy.

The report concludes with a sobering assessment of the stakes: the disinformation campaign waged by fossil fuel interests threatens not only present generations but future ones as well. Its potential consequences—the undermining of civilization and possibly human extinction—make addressing this information warfare an urgent global priority.

This is a concerning trend, but not surprising given the high stakes involved. Fossil fuel interests and other actors have a vested interest in sowing doubt about climate change. We need to redouble efforts to elevate credible scientific voices and inoculate the public against manipulation.
