Chinese military disinformation campaigns have surged alongside Beijing’s large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, with defense officials identifying dozens of false claims designed to undermine public confidence and sow discord.
The Ministry of National Defense (MND) revealed yesterday that 46 separate pieces of disinformation have been detected since China began its military drills. These false narratives primarily target Taiwan’s policies, disparage its armed forces, and attempt to erode trust in the U.S.-Taiwan relationship.
“We have identified 46 pieces of disinformation since the Chinese communists began their military exercise, mainly focused on attacking our policies, slandering our armed forces and eroding trust in the US,” said Major General Chu Hui-fang, head of psychological warfare at the MND’s Political Warfare Bureau, during a news conference.
Among the most concerning examples, Chinese state-run media platform Global Times falsely claimed that China Coast Guard vessels had quarantined the ports of Keelung, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Hualien, effectively suggesting a blockade of Taiwan’s major maritime trade hubs. In another instance, online videos circulated alleging that Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) forces had advanced to within 9 kilometers of Taiwan’s southern shores.
Defense officials emphatically rejected these claims. Lieutenant General Hsieh Jih-sheng, deputy chief of the general staff for intelligence at the MND, clarified that no Chinese warplanes or warships have entered Taiwan’s territorial waters during the exercises.
The disinformation campaign has extended to sophisticated visual manipulation. Hsieh specifically addressed a video released Monday by China’s state broadcaster CCTV that included what appeared to be drone footage of Taipei 101, Taiwan’s iconic skyscraper. The video caption implied a Chinese aircraft had flown dangerously close to the landmark in a show of force.
“Although drone activity was detected during the exercise, none entered Taiwan’s contiguous zone, which extends 24 nautical miles from the coastline,” Hsieh stated, debunking the implied threat.
MND spokesperson Sun Li-fang placed the current disinformation push within a broader context, noting that every major PLA exercise since August 2022 has combined military operations with information warfare tactics aimed at influencing public opinion. These coordinated campaigns target multiple audiences simultaneously, including Taiwan’s domestic population, neighboring countries, and Taiwan’s international allies.
Taiwan’s response has been multipronged, with defense officials monitoring Chinese disinformation in real-time and issuing prompt clarifications to counter false narratives. The defense ministry has emphasized the importance of media literacy during this period of heightened tension.
President William Lai reinforced this message earlier in the day, urging Taiwanese citizens to remain vigilant against misinformation and disinformation. In a social media post, Lai wrote: “At this critical moment, unity between the military and civilians in countering misinformation and disinformation constitutes the strongest defense of our democratic homeland.”
The current disinformation campaign coincides with one of China’s most significant military exercises around Taiwan in recent years. Beijing has consistently opposed Taiwan’s separate governance and democratic system, viewing the island as a breakaway province despite Taiwan functioning as a self-governing democracy with its own military, currency, and diplomatic relationships.
Security analysts note that disinformation has become an increasingly critical component of China’s “gray zone” tactics against Taiwan – actions that fall below the threshold of conventional warfare but aim to wear down resistance and create internal division. The coordinated nature of these information operations demonstrates Beijing’s comprehensive approach to pressuring Taiwan across multiple domains simultaneously.
As tensions continue, Taiwan’s ability to identify and counter false information remains a crucial element of its national security strategy and democratic resilience.
