Bangladesh Chhatra Dal leaders met with Dhaka University’s Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday to follow up on an investigation into alleged online disinformation campaigns that misuse the university’s name to target political opponents.
The delegation, led by DU unit Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, visited Professor A B M Obaidul Islam’s office to discuss concerns they had formally raised in a memorandum submitted on April 26.
According to the student leaders, numerous Facebook pages falsely representing Dhaka University have been spreading provocative content aimed at Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) members. The group had initially demanded action within 48 hours of their memorandum submission.
“The vice-chancellor assured us that the university is taking these allegations seriously,” Sahos told reporters after the meeting. “A probe committee has already been established and is actively investigating the matter. The VC indicated that a report would be published soon.”
The Chhatra Dal, which serves as the student wing of the BNP, has accused what they describe as a “coordinated group” of operating these Facebook pages since August 5 this year. Shipon claimed these pages specifically target Chhatra Dal and BNP leaders, including female student activists, with the intention of creating campus instability.
“Despite our earlier complaints to the administration, we haven’t seen effective action taken,” Shipon said. “This ongoing disinformation campaign appears designed to discredit our organization and create division among students.”
The proliferation of fake social media accounts misrepresenting educational institutions has become an increasing concern in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Such pages often blend legitimate university news with politically motivated content, making it difficult for readers to distinguish official communications from misinformation.
The Dhaka University administration faces the challenge of addressing these allegations while maintaining its political neutrality in a highly polarized environment. The university, founded in 1921, is Bangladesh’s oldest and most prestigious higher education institution, with its student politics historically playing a significant role in national movements.
Student politics in Bangladesh has long been characterized by intense rivalry between groups affiliated with major political parties. The Chhatra Dal competes primarily with the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, for influence on university campuses.
Digital disinformation campaigns have become increasingly sophisticated tools in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Media rights organizations have documented a rise in coordinated social media operations that target opposition groups, often through impersonation of trusted institutions or news sources.
While agreeing to allow the administration time to complete its investigation, the Chhatra Dal leaders emphasized they expect concrete results. “We trust the process will be thorough, but we urge the authorities not to let this matter slide,” Sahos added.
In a related development, the student leaders announced that the central Chhatra Dal organization has formed a four-member committee to investigate a separate incident involving journalists at Shahbagh Police Station. This probe committee will look into allegations of attacks on media personnel at the station, highlighting the broader tensions between political actors and the press.
The university administration has not yet released a timeline for when the investigation into the Facebook pages will be completed, but the case underscores the growing challenges educational institutions face in protecting their names and reputations in the digital sphere.
