New X Feature Reveals User Location Data, Raising Privacy Concerns

Social media platform X has unveiled a controversial new feature that allows users to view the country or region where other accounts are believed to be based, sparking debates over transparency and privacy.

The feature, called “about this account,” was rolled out over the weekend and can be accessed through any user’s bio. It provides information about the geographic location from which an account regularly connects to the platform, potentially exposing users who may be misrepresenting their location for engagement or political purposes.

According to Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, the platform will exempt official government accounts from location disclosure “to prevent acts of terrorism against government leaders.” Bier also announced that an update planned for release today will improve the feature’s accuracy to 99%.

“This represents a significant shift in how X approaches user data transparency,” said Marcus Gilroy, a digital privacy analyst. “While it may help identify inauthentic accounts, it also raises questions about whether users understood their location data would be publicly accessible in this way.”

The feature’s accuracy comes with caveats. X has acknowledged that the data may not always be precise, as it can be affected by recent travel, temporary relocation, or the use of virtual private networks (VPNs), which allow users to mask their true location when accessing the internet.

The BBC’s Verify team notes they cannot independently confirm the accuracy of the location information X provides about each account.

The implementation has received mixed reactions from the platform’s user base. Supporters praise the increased transparency, arguing it will help combat misinformation and identify accounts that deliberately mislead users for engagement or to push political agendas. Critics, however, express concerns about potential privacy violations and whether such location data should be publicly available.

“This kind of feature needs to be carefully balanced against user privacy expectations,” noted Emma Johnson, executive director of the Digital Rights Coalition. “There are legitimate reasons why people might want to keep their location private, from journalists working in hostile environments to individuals concerned about stalking or harassment.”

The move comes amid broader changes at X since its acquisition by Elon Musk in 2022. Under Musk’s leadership, the platform has implemented numerous controversial features and policy changes, often with limited prior notice to users.

Privacy advocates point out that while the feature might help combat certain forms of misinformation, it could have unintended consequences for vulnerable users. In regions where free speech is limited, revealing a user’s country of origin could potentially expose them to government scrutiny or persecution.

Tech industry observers also note that the feature represents a growing trend among social media companies to provide more context about the origins of content on their platforms, particularly following concerns about foreign interference in elections and coordinated inauthentic behavior.

As X prepares to release the updated version of the feature, users and privacy experts will be watching closely to see how the implementation affects the platform’s dynamics and whether additional privacy controls will be offered to those who prefer not to have their location information publicly accessible.

The development raises important questions about the balance between transparency and privacy in digital spaces, and whether users should have more control over what personal data is revealed about them on social media platforms.
