Viral Video of Burning Boat Falsely Linked to Iran-US Conflict
Misinformation surrounding tensions in the Middle East has spread across social media platforms, with pro-Iranian accounts falsely claiming that footage shows a US naval vessel ablaze following an Iranian attack.
An investigation by AAP FactCheck has confirmed the video actually depicts a luxury boat fire near Pittwater, north of Sydney, Australia, that occurred on March 16. The incident took place at the mouth of the Hawkesbury River and has no connection to any military conflict.
The misleading claim first appeared on X (formerly Twitter) from an account called “Iran time” on March 17, before spreading to other platforms including Facebook and Instagram. The X account, which has amassed more than 180,000 followers, claims to be an “Iran News Group” based in Tehran, though platform information indicates it operates from Saudi Arabia.
“Iran has just attacked a US ship, it is clearly visible, it is completely on fire and many ships have been targeted,” read one Facebook post sharing the video.
The account exclusively posts pro-Iranian content about the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. However, a reverse image search of frames from the video quickly revealed its true origin.
Local Australian media outlet 7News reported on the actual incident, confirming that those aboard the luxury vessel were rescued by a passing boat before their vessel eventually capsized. According to the Manly Observer, New South Wales police believe the fire originated in the engine bay of the recreational boat.
The dramatic aerial footage of the burning vessel was captured by SKYview Aerial Photography, a Sydney-based company, further confirming the Australian origin of the incident.
This false claim emerges amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Earlier in the conflict, Iran had claimed it struck a US aircraft carrier with a missile, an assertion American officials promptly denied. To date, there have been no independently verified reports of successful Iranian attacks on US naval vessels in the region.
The spread of this misinformation highlights the challenges of verifying content during international conflicts, where footage is often repurposed and presented without context to support particular narratives. Social media platforms have become battlegrounds for information warfare, with videos and images frequently taken out of context to advance specific geopolitical viewpoints.
Media literacy experts recommend that users verify the source of dramatic footage before sharing, particularly during times of international tension when misinformation tends to proliferate rapidly across social media platforms.
This incident serves as a reminder of how easily decontextualized footage can be weaponized to create false narratives about international conflicts, potentially inflaming tensions and creating unwarranted public concern about military engagements that never actually occurred.
As the situation in the Middle East continues to develop, fact-checking organizations like AAP FactCheck remain vigilant in monitoring and debunking false claims circulating online.

The cost guidance is better than expected. If they deliver, the stock could rerate.
