Indian authorities have swiftly moved to counter a coordinated disinformation campaign targeting West Bengal following the recent election results, with both government agencies and local police denouncing viral social media posts that falsely claim widespread violence and military intervention in Kolkata.

The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit has identified numerous false narratives circulating online, particularly from what they describe as “Pakistani propaganda accounts.” These fabricated stories claim that the Indian Army has entered Kolkata in large numbers only to be blocked by civilians, that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been injured, that her residence was attacked by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and that foreign embassies were ordered to close.

“This claim is fake. These claims are part of a coordinated disinformation campaign from Pakistani propaganda networks,” the PIB stated categorically in its official response to the misinformation.

The Kolkata Police have reinforced this message, sharing screenshots of the accounts responsible for spreading the rumors. In their investigation, authorities have found that unrelated videos and photographs from different locations are being falsely attributed to Kolkata to manufacture a climate of fear and instability.

“Several misleading posts are being circulated on social media by falsely linking unrelated videos and photos from other places to Kolkata after the election results,” the Kolkata Police stated on their official channels. “Kolkata Police is closely monitoring such content. Strict legal action is being taken against those spreading misinformation and attempting to disturb public peace.”

The department has emphasized that “the situation in Kolkata is fully under control” while urging citizens to exercise caution and refrain from sharing unverified information that could further inflame tensions.

The timing of this disinformation wave is significant, coming immediately after a dramatic shift in West Bengal’s political landscape. The recent state elections saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieve a decisive victory, capturing 207 out of 293 contested seats. Polling for one remaining seat in Falta is yet to be conducted.

Disinformation specialists note that the tactics employed follow a familiar pattern of crisis exploitation. The false posts employ attention-grabbing “BREAKING” tags and contain specific, fabricated details designed to lend credibility to the falsehoods. One particularly inflammatory claim alleged that 19 people had been killed and 98 injured in violent clashes, with TMC (Trinamool Congress) workers being specifically targeted under the supervision of the Director General of the CRPF.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of election-related misinformation in India, where social media platforms have become battlegrounds for competing narratives. With over 700 million internet users and widespread use of messaging platforms like WhatsApp, false information can spread rapidly before fact-checkers can respond.

The swift response by authorities reflects increased vigilance around digital misinformation campaigns, particularly during politically sensitive periods. In recent years, India has developed more robust fact-checking mechanisms and public awareness campaigns to combat false information.

Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, working to identify the sources of the disinformation and prevent escalation of tensions based on fabricated reports. Digital forensics experts are analyzing the patterns of these false narratives to determine their origin and potential coordination.

Officials have called on social media platforms to enhance their content moderation efforts during politically sensitive periods and urged citizens to verify information through official channels before sharing content related to public safety or political developments.
