Fake News Website Targets Armenian Prime Minister’s Family in Fresh Disinformation Campaign
Armenian officials have denounced a new wave of disinformation targeting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his family after a questionable website published false allegations about financial misconduct and corruption.
The website “VT Foreign Policy,” previously known for publishing unsubstantiated claims and misinformation, released a fabricated report claiming that Mariam Pashinyan, the Prime Minister’s eldest daughter, had orchestrated an illegal scheme through her Atlix service business that allegedly embezzled more than $80 million from Armenia’s state budget.
The Prime Minister’s spokesperson, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, issued a firm rebuttal. “The article is a lie and has nothing to do with reality,” Baghdasaryan stated. “This is yet another disinformation campaign against the country’s prime minister and members of his family.”
The false report gained additional traction when it was shared on social media platform X by an account called “RussiaNews,” potentially amplifying its reach to audiences outside Armenia.
The fabricated allegations extend beyond the Prime Minister’s daughter to include other family members. The article made unsubstantiated claims about Pashinyan’s ex-wife, Anna Hakobyan, as well as her brother Hrachya Hakobyan, who serves as a lawmaker, falsely implicating them in undefined corruption scandals.
In addition to targeting Pashinyan’s family, the article attempted to create a connection between the alleged scheme and prominent Armenian businessman Samvel Alexanyan. The report incorrectly identified Alexanyan as a member of the ruling Civil Contract party—a connection that does not exist—while also making serious allegations that he used the Atlix business as a front for gunrunning operations to “Kurdish groups” abroad.
This incident represents the latest in what Armenian officials describe as an ongoing pattern of disinformation campaigns targeting the country’s leadership. Armenia, a small landlocked nation in the South Caucasus region, has navigated complex geopolitical waters in recent years under Pashinyan’s leadership, particularly in its relationships with Russia, the European Union, and neighboring Azerbaijan.
Media experts note that the South Caucasus region has increasingly become a battleground for information warfare, with politically motivated disinformation campaigns becoming more sophisticated and targeted. The false reports appear designed to undermine public trust in Armenia’s government at a politically sensitive time for the nation.
Armenia continues to recover from the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with Azerbaijan and subsequent territorial changes in the region. These geopolitical tensions have made the country particularly vulnerable to information operations that seek to destabilize its political landscape.
Analysts suggest the timing and nature of these fabricated allegations might be connected to Armenia’s ongoing efforts to balance its traditional ties with Russia while simultaneously pursuing closer relations with Western institutions.
Media literacy advocates in the region have emphasized the importance of source verification and critical consumption of news, particularly when serious allegations target government officials or their families. The spread of such unverified claims across social media platforms presents a growing challenge for societies seeking reliable information.
Armenian authorities have not specified what measures they might take in response to this latest disinformation effort, though government officials have previously called for greater international cooperation in combating cross-border disinformation campaigns.
As digital disinformation becomes an increasingly common tool in regional politics, the incident underscores the challenges facing smaller democracies in protecting their information space while maintaining open media environments.
