Türkiye Combats Disinformation, Reaffirms Strong Ties with Azerbaijan

Turkish authorities have launched a coordinated effort to counter what they describe as deliberate disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining the relationship between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, amid rising regional tensions in the Middle East.

The country’s official anti-disinformation agency released a statement this weekend on NSosyal, a Turkish social media platform, warning citizens about “exaggerated rhetoric, disinformation, and propaganda” targeting the alliance between the two nations.

“Closely bound by unshakable historical ties and shared values, Türkiye and Azerbaijan have not only today, but also in the past, successfully overcome the many challenges they faced,” the statement read, emphasizing the resilience of bilateral relations.

The agency highlighted that ties between the countries remain robust under the leadership of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who continue to uphold the principle of “One Nation, Two States” – a slogan that reflects the cultural and historical bonds between the Turkic nations.

This campaign against misinformation comes as regional tensions escalate. Burhanettin Duran, communications director for the Turkish presidency, confirmed on Saturday that authorities had detected a significant increase in online disinformation related to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

“Since the outbreak of hostilities last month, we’ve taken decisive action against digital manipulation attempts targeting public order, social peace, and national security,” Duran told reporters. He revealed that Turkish authorities had blocked 41 social media accounts and removed dozens of posts spreading false information about regional developments.

The communications director explained that many accounts across platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram had been sharing unverified content with apparent intent to create confusion and panic among Turkish citizens. These activities prompted Turkish authorities to implement blocking measures as part of their broader strategy to maintain social stability during a period of heightened regional uncertainty.

The government’s response reflects growing concerns about the impact of digital misinformation on national security, particularly as the Middle East conflict threatens to widen. Türkiye, which maintains diplomatic relations with both Iran and Israel while supporting Azerbaijan in its territorial disputes, has positioned itself as a potential mediator in regional conflicts.

Experts note that the Türkiye-Azerbaijan relationship has deepened significantly in recent years, particularly following Azerbaijan’s military success in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, during which Türkiye provided substantial diplomatic and military support.

The Turkish anti-disinformation agency has repeatedly urged citizens to exercise caution when consuming news about international developments and to rely solely on “official statements issued by competent authorities” rather than unverified claims circulating online.

This initiative aligns with Türkiye’s broader efforts to regulate online content, which have included legislation requiring social media platforms to establish local offices and comply with content removal requests – measures that have drawn criticism from digital rights advocates but which the government defends as necessary for national security.

As monitoring continues, Turkish officials have emphasized that protecting the integrity of information, particularly concerning international relationships, remains a priority for the government as it navigates complex regional dynamics.
