US Consulate in Toronto Struck by Gunfire, No Injuries Reported

The U.S. consulate in Toronto was struck by gunfire early Tuesday morning in what authorities are calling a “national security incident.”

According to Deputy Chief Frank Barredo of the Toronto Police Service, two male suspects exited a white Honda CR-V around 4:30 a.m. and discharged firearms at the heavily fortified diplomatic building before fleeing the scene. The vehicle was traveling westbound on Dundas Street West before turning southbound onto University Avenue and stopping directly in front of the consulate.

Investigators have recovered multiple shell casings from the scene and noted damage to the building’s glass and door. While people were inside the facility at the time of the shooting, no injuries have been reported.

Chris Leather, chief superintendent and officer in charge of criminal operations for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Ontario, confirmed that the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team has been mobilized. The team is working collaboratively with Toronto police, federal partners, and U.S. counterparts, including the FBI.

“There will be no tolerance for any form of intimidation, harassment, or harmful targeting of any communities or individuals in Canada,” Leather stated during the press briefing.

Officials emphasized that the investigation remains in its preliminary stages, making it too early to determine a motive or whether the incident will ultimately be classified as terrorism under Canada’s criminal code. The attack comes amid heightened concerns about the security of diplomatic facilities worldwide, with several U.S. diplomatic posts reporting security incidents in recent months.

As a precautionary measure, security has been increased at both the U.S. and Israeli consulates in Toronto and in the Ottawa region. Despite this heightened alert, authorities have stated there is no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety as the investigation continues.

A State Department official confirmed to media outlets that the agency is aware of the incident and is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with local law enforcement. The attack on the Toronto facility represents a concerning development in the security landscape for U.S. diplomatic missions abroad.

The premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, issued a strong condemnation of the attack, calling it “an absolutely unacceptable act of violence and intimidation aimed at our American friends and neighbours.”

“Everyone at all levels of government and across Canada needs to make clear that there is zero tolerance for this sort of intimidating and dangerous behaviour, and that we will do whatever it takes to prosecute and punish the people responsible to the fullest extent of the law,” Ford wrote on social media platform X.

This incident follows a troubling pattern of security concerns at U.S. diplomatic facilities globally. In recent months, U.S. embassies and consulates have faced various security threats, including drone strikes in Saudi Arabia, an explosion reported at the U.S. Embassy in Norway, and heightened security measures implemented at facilities in multiple regions due to geopolitical tensions.

The shooting also comes at a time when international diplomatic missions face evolving security challenges. Security experts have noted that diplomatic facilities, which traditionally operated as accessible public service centers, have increasingly been forced to implement fortress-like security measures in response to growing threats.

Canadian and U.S. authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspects or the white Honda CR-V to contact law enforcement immediately. Police have released surveillance images of the vehicle, hoping the public might assist in identifying those responsible.

The investigation is expected to involve extensive review of security camera footage from the area, forensic analysis of the recovered shell casings, and coordination between multiple law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border.
