Former Tirumala Chairman Rejects Laddu Adulteration Claims, Calls for Evidence-Based Investigation
Former Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Chairman YV Subba Reddy has forcefully denied allegations that approximately 20 crore Tirumala laddus were prepared using adulterated ghee between 2019 and 2024 during his tenure. Speaking in Vijayawada on Wednesday, Reddy expressed full support for the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry while criticizing what he described as premature leaks to the media without scientific evidence.
“I welcome an honest investigation and am ready to cooperate with the SIT at any time,” Reddy stated. “However, spreading unverified information without conclusive laboratory results is not only dangerous but deliberately misleading the public and hurting devotees’ sentiments.”
The controversy marks the latest chapter in a politically charged debate surrounding the sacred prasadam (offering) at one of India’s most revered Hindu temples. Tirumala laddu, the consecrated sweet distributed at the Sri Venkateswara Temple, is consumed by millions of devotees annually as a sacred blessing.
Reddy pointed to inconsistencies in the allegations, noting that accusers had initially claimed vegetable fat was mixed with ghee before changing their narrative to suggest animal fat contamination. “Why do those making accusations keep changing their story instead of waiting for verified laboratory results?” he questioned. “Has the SIT officially confirmed the presence of animal fat? The truth should only be declared after conclusive laboratory evidence becomes available.”
The former chairman reminded reporters that current Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had made similar allegations previously, which prompted a petition to the Supreme Court. The court subsequently directed the formation of a CBI-monitored SIT to investigate whether animal fat was indeed used in the preparation of the laddus.
In addressing technical aspects of the controversy, Reddy highlighted statements from TTD officials that four suspicious ghee tankers were rejected and returned without being used in production. “How can these same four tankers be the subject of discussion again when they should never have entered the premises without proper laboratory clearance?” he asked.
The dispute extends to procurement practices as well. Reddy refuted claims that ghee purchased during his chairmanship at ₹326 per kilogram indicated adulteration. He countered by noting that during 2017-18, when the Telugu Desam Party was in power, ghee was procured at rates between ₹273.95 and ₹279 per kilogram.
“If lower procurement prices suggest adulteration, were the laddus prepared during those years also impure?” Reddy questioned, suggesting a double standard in the allegations.
The controversy has significant implications beyond religion, touching on political dynamics in Andhra Pradesh. The TTD, which manages the Tirumala temple, oversees one of the wealthiest religious institutions in the world with an annual budget exceeding ₹3,000 crore. Any allegations regarding its prasadam preparation carry immense reputational risk for both the institution and those associated with its administration.
Reddy claimed the allegations were politically motivated to target the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which governed Andhra Pradesh until earlier this year when Naidu’s TDP returned to power.
“This misinformation campaign damages Tirumala’s sanctity and appears designed solely to target political opponents,” Reddy asserted. He urged media organizations to report responsibly and avoid what he characterized as TDP propaganda that undermines public faith in the sacred institution.
The SIT investigation continues amid heightened public attention, with devotees across India closely watching developments that affect one of Hinduism’s most revered temple traditions.

This seems like a complex and sensitive issue. While the allegations are concerning, I’m glad to see Reddy calling for a fair, evidence-based investigation. Rushing to judgment without conclusive proof could do more harm than good. I hope the SIT can provide clarity and restore confidence, if appropriate.
This certainly seems like a sensitive and politically charged issue. I agree with Reddy that premature media speculation without hard evidence is counterproductive. A thorough, impartial SIT probe is the best path forward to determine the facts and address any legitimate concerns.
