In a significant development that raises questions about content moderation in AI-powered platforms, Elon Musk’s recently launched Grokipedia has come under scrutiny for entries that appear to portray white nationalist figures and ideologies in a favorable light, according to an extensive analysis by The Guardian.

The AI-generated encyclopedia, which now hosts over 800,000 entries, was launched by Musk with the stated aim of eliminating what he describes as “propaganda” in Wikipedia. However, the analysis reveals numerous entries that present white nationalists, antisemites, and Holocaust deniers in sympathetic terms while questioning the credibility of their critics.

When contacted for comment, xAI, Musk’s AI company that created Grokipedia, responded with an automated message stating only: “Legacy Media Lies.”

The investigation found striking differences in how controversial figures are portrayed on Grokipedia versus Wikipedia. For example, Grokipedia describes white nationalist Jared Taylor as playing a “pivotal role in intellectualizing white preservation” with a “measured dissent that avoided the pitfalls of extremism.” This contrasts sharply with Wikipedia’s description of Taylor as “an American white supremacist” who promotes “scientific racism and voluntary racial segregation.”

Similarly, Kevin MacDonald, whom the Southern Poverty Law Center calls the “neo-Nazi movement’s favorite academic,” receives a favorable treatment in Grokipedia. The platform describes his work as simply “focusing on applying evolutionary principles to human social behavior” that counters “institutional biases toward universalism in academic discourse.”

Holocaust denier David Irving is portrayed in heroic terms as symbolizing “resistance to institutional suppression of unorthodox historical inquiry.” William Luther Pierce, described by the SPLC as “America’s most important neo-Nazi for three decades,” is characterized by Grokipedia as promoting “the preservation and advancement of the European racial heritage.”

Beyond individual profiles, Grokipedia entries on concepts like racial nationalism, eugenics, and white nationalism appear to provide scientific justifications for racist ideologies. The entry on racial nationalism claims it “draws on evolutionary biology” and is less an “arbitrary prejudice” than “a mechanism to safeguard adapted gene pools against erosion.”

Evolutionary biologist Kevin Bird, who has criticized attempts to revive scientific racism, described Grokipedia’s racial nationalism entry as “a completely selective kind of fun house mirror world of interpreting the last 30 years of biology.”

The platform also contains entries on racial categories characteristic of early 20th-century scientific racism, presenting them as scientifically credible based on evidence including skull measurements. These entries misrepresent modern genetic research, according to scientist Noah Rosenberg, whose work is cited in several Grokipedia entries.

“Our 2002 study accords with 50+ years of human population genetics research that does not support such biological concepts of race,” Rosenberg stated. “The last 50+ years of research in the field of human population genetics undermines rather than supports essentialized biological race theories.”

Grokipedia entries on white supremacist regimes like Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and the whites-only community of Orania in South Africa attempt to justify their existence on economic grounds, praising their “effective resource management” and “economic prosperity” while dismissing critics as suffering from “institutional biases.”

Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project on Hate and Extremism, condemned the platform: “Grokipedia is another example of Elon Musk proliferating hateful disinformation and far-right propaganda. The site whitewashes white supremacists, anti-Semites and other extremists, providing ‘information’ that clearly distorts the truth.”

This controversy comes amid growing concerns about content moderation on Musk’s platforms. Richard Cooke, author of a political biography on Musk, observed that “Grokipedia is a copy of Wikipedia but one where in each instance that Wikipedia disagrees with the richest man in the world, it’s ‘rectified’ so that it’s congruent with them.”

Presenting white nationalists and Holocaust deniers in a favorable light is a dangerous precedent. Content moderation is crucial for AI projects like this to avoid spreading misinformation and propaganda. Musk should prioritize fact-checking and inclusive curation.

  4. I’m concerned about the potential impact of this biased content in Grokipedia. AI-generated platforms must be held to high standards of accuracy and impartiality, especially when covering sensitive political and historical topics. Musk needs to address these issues transparently.

  5. This is a worrying development that raises serious questions about Musk’s commitment to truth and objectivity in his AI projects. Presenting white nationalists favorably while dismissing concerns as “legacy media lies” is deeply troubling. Musk needs to take immediate action to address these issues.

  6. This is deeply troubling if true. Allowing white nationalist content to proliferate in an AI-powered platform is unacceptable. Musk and his team need to thoroughly investigate these allegations and take swift action to remove any hateful or extremist material.

  7. If the reports are accurate, this is a major ethical and reputational issue for Musk and his Grokipedia project. Presenting white nationalist figures positively while dismissing concerns is deeply problematic. Musk must take swift action to address these allegations and ensure Grokipedia upholds democratic values.
