Trump White House Launches Controversial Jan. 6 Website, Sparking Widespread Condemnation

The Trump administration ignited fierce backlash Tuesday after unveiling a new White House website that attempts to rewrite the history of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Critics immediately denounced the site as “Orwellian doublespeak” and a dangerous attempt to use official government resources to spread misinformation about one of the most documented attacks on American democracy.

The website, hosted on the official White House domain (whitehouse.gov/j6), presents a starkly different version of events than what millions of Americans witnessed in real-time. It characterizes the rioters as “peaceful” protestors while shifting blame for the violence to then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Capitol Police, and other Democrats and Republicans who criticized former President Trump.

Among the site’s most controversial claims is the assertion that law enforcement caused the riot through “aggressive” and “provocative tactics” that “escalated tensions.” This directly contradicts extensive video evidence, including footage recorded by the rioters themselves, showing violent assaults on police officers.

CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale described it as “a truly bananas up-is-down fake-history web page,” while journalist Mehdi Hasan called it “insanely dishonest, anti-American and Orwellian” to host such content on an official government website.

The site omits critical facts about Trump’s role in the events, including his baseless claims about election fraud that inspired the riot, his inflammatory comments about then-Vice President Mike Pence during the attack, and his delayed response in calling for rioters to leave the Capitol peacefully.

Other false claims on the website include the assertion that Pence could have prevented certification of the Electoral College votes and that Ashli Babbitt, who was shot while attempting to breach a barricaded door inside the Capitol, was “murdered in cold blood.” The site also continues to promote the thoroughly debunked claim that the 2020 election was stolen.

Former Trump White House aide Sarah Matthews responded to the website with alarm, writing: “More terrifying than the cowardice displayed by so many in the aftermath of that day? The velociraptors learned how to get out of their cages. Trump and his allies realized the system wouldn’t stop them.”

Capitol Police officers and staff who experienced the violence firsthand have expressed particular outrage over the site’s characterization of events. NBC News reporter Scott MacFarlane noted: “There is a lot of pushback from Jan 6 police and staff victims about this.”

Political commentator Stuart Stevens remarked on the restraint shown by law enforcement that day: “It is astounding and a tribute to the professionalism and courage of the Capitol Police that [they] didn’t open fire and stack the domestic terrorists like cord wood. They had every right to use deadly force to defend the US Capitol.”

Conservative commentator Stephen Hayes was equally critical: “The president tried to steal an election, summoned violence in support of his lies and continues to spin unhinged conspiracies to this day. It’s a national embarrassment – and so are those who amplify his J6 bullshit.”

The website’s launch comes as the country remains deeply divided over the events of January 6th and the broader question of election integrity. Critics warn that using official government platforms to spread demonstrably false narratives represents a dangerous new level of information manipulation.

“We must keep speaking the truth,” wrote political analyst Tara Setmayer. “We can’t let MAGA rewrite history.”
