Iranian Propaganda Claims Draw Criticism for Media Outlet Backed by Billionaire’s Daughter

Drop Site News, a nonprofit media outlet financially supported by Nika Soon-Shiong, faces mounting criticism after publishing unverified Iranian propaganda regarding a recent U.S. military incident in Iran. Soon-Shiong, daughter of billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong who owns the Los Angeles Times, has backed the self-described “non-aligned and anti-establishment” outlet founded by journalists Ryan Grim and Jeremy Scahill.

The controversy erupted when Drop Site News shared unsubstantiated claims from Iranian state media about U.S. military actions following the downing of an American aircraft. “Iranian state-linked Tasnim News, citing a military source, claims U.S. forces are bombing areas in southwest Iran where a missing pilot may be located, alleging Washington has ‘lost hope’ of recovery and is attempting to kill him,” the outlet posted on social media.

Military and intelligence experts quickly challenged these assertions, noting no verified information supports claims that the U.S. intentionally targeted its own personnel. Instead, multiple reports indicate U.S. forces conducted airstrikes to destroy abandoned American equipment and provide critical air support during a complex rescue mission of downed aircrew members.

The incident involved a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle shot down over Iran’s Isfahan Province around April 3, 2026. Both crew members ejected behind enemy lines. While one crew member was quickly recovered, the weapons officer reportedly survived for two days in mountainous terrain while evading Iranian forces before U.S. special operations successfully extracted them on April 5.

Drop Site News further amplified Iranian claims by reporting: “The source added: ‘We will not announce whether the pilot is in our custody or not,’ and accused the U.S. of ‘not telling the full truth’ about the first crew member the U.S. claims was recovered.”

Media analysts and national security experts have condemned the outlet for uncritically broadcasting Iranian government narratives during a sensitive military operation. Critics argue that republishing such claims without proper verification potentially endangers U.S. personnel and serves foreign propaganda interests.

This isn’t the first time Soon-Shiong has been embroiled in media controversy. She previously made headlines by claiming her family blocked the Los Angeles Times from endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race as a protest against U.S. policy regarding the war in Gaza. Her father later clarified that Nika holds no formal role at the newspaper.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about media independence, proper journalistic verification procedures, and the influence of wealthy benefactors in news organizations. Questions remain about editorial standards at newer digital news platforms that position themselves as alternatives to traditional media.

Drop Site News describes itself as “non-aligned and anti-establishment,” suggesting an editorial approach skeptical of official U.S. government narratives. However, critics argue that such positioning doesn’t exempt media outlets from basic journalistic responsibilities, including verifying information from adversarial foreign governments before publication.

The Washington-based outlet has not yet responded to requests for comment from other media organizations, including the California Post. Media ethics experts suggest that publishing unverified claims from state-controlled media in countries with established patterns of disinformation raises serious questions about journalistic responsibility, particularly during sensitive military operations.

As tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to simmer, the incident underscores the complex interplay between media coverage, national security interests, and the challenges of reporting on international conflicts in the digital age.
