Ukrainian diplomats and activists have successfully lobbied for the cancellation of a Russian propaganda film screening in Switzerland, marking another development in the ongoing information war that parallels the physical conflict in Ukraine.

The municipality of Muralto, Switzerland has canceled the screening of “Maidan: The Road to War,” a film produced by RT, Russia’s state-controlled media outlet. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha praised the decision on his official Telegram channel, emphasizing that freedom of speech principles should not provide cover for disinformation campaigns or attempts to justify military aggression.

“The cancellation of the screening was the result of joint efforts by Ukrainian diplomats and public activists,” Sybiha noted, highlighting the coordinated approach Ukraine is taking to counter Russian information operations abroad.

The minister’s comments reflect Ukraine’s growing concern about Russia’s use of cultural and media platforms to shape international opinion. “Russia has long used culture as a tool of war, trying to manipulate European public opinion,” he stated. “The goal has always been one: to undermine European societies and manipulate public opinion. But the reality of war is far from the clichés created by Russian literature, theater, and ballet.”

Sybiha’s remarks come at a time when the Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered its fourth year, with no clear end in sight. The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 following the 2014 annexation of Crimea, has now lasted over 1,400 days, according to Ukrainian officials.

The Foreign Minister took the opportunity to emphasize what he sees as collective Russian responsibility for the ongoing conflict. He asserted that the current war, in its duration and brutality, has already exceeded the scale of fighting on the Eastern Front during World War II—a particularly powerful comparison in the European context.

“Despite all the books about the ‘mysterious Russian soul’ and other nonsense, Russia has raised a generation of war criminals who kill, rape, loot, and torture people in Ukraine,” Sybiha stated bluntly.

The canceled film represents part of Russia’s broader information strategy targeting Western audiences. RT, formerly known as Russia Today, has faced restrictions in numerous countries since the war began, with many nations viewing it as a propaganda arm of the Kremlin rather than a legitimate news organization. The European Union suspended RT’s broadcasting license in March 2022, though its content continues to circulate through various channels and in countries with fewer restrictions.

Sybiha described the RT-produced film as “toxic mental poison” and an example of state propaganda that “has no place in European public spaces.” He expressed gratitude to the Swiss authorities for what he characterized as understanding the threat and protecting the European cultural sphere from Russian information influence.

The incident highlights the complex balancing act facing democratic nations: upholding principles of free expression while preventing the spread of state-sponsored disinformation. Switzerland, traditionally neutral in international conflicts, has increasingly aligned with EU sanctions against Russia while maintaining its distinct diplomatic position.

This development comes as Ukraine continues to seek support from its international partners, including military aid and diplomatic pressure on Russia. The country recently convened meetings of both the UN Security Council and the Ukraine-NATO Council following Russia’s statements about the use of a new weapons system called “Oreshnik,” demonstrating Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to maintain international attention on the conflict.

As the war continues, the battle over narrative and information appears likely to remain a crucial aspect of the broader conflict, with both sides recognizing the importance of international public opinion in securing continued support for their respective positions.
