Turkish authorities have detained 170 individuals across multiple cities for allegedly spreading propaganda for the PKK terrorist organization, security officials announced Tuesday. The arrests occurred before and after Nevruz celebrations, which authorities claim were exploited for terrorist sympathies despite their cultural significance.

The Turkish National Police reported that the suspects were apprehended during coordinated operations spanning several cities. Initial raids conducted between March 17 and March 22 resulted in the detention of 72 people in Aydın, Batman, Gaziantep, Istanbul, Izmir, Kocaeli, Mardin, Şanlıurfa, and Van. These individuals face charges of violating public assembly laws and disseminating terrorist propaganda. A second wave of operations on March 24 led to the arrest of an additional 98 suspects in Istanbul, Diyarbakır, Izmir, Şanlıurfa, Antalya, and Mardin.

According to authorities, the Nevruz events over the weekend transformed into displays of support for the PKK, despite being organized by the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party). Nevruz, traditionally a springtime festival celebrated throughout the Turkic world, has reportedly been appropriated by PKK supporters in recent years to advance their agenda.

The detentions come at a sensitive moment in Turkey’s decades-long struggle with PKK terrorism. The group is currently undergoing a disarmament process following a significant development earlier this year when the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli, an ally of the government, launched a “terror-free Türkiye” initiative. This effort ultimately led to Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned PKK leader, calling for the organization to surrender its weapons and dissolve.

Turkish intelligence agencies are monitoring the PKK’s compliance with the disarmament agreement reached last year. The government is preparing legislative changes to facilitate this process, including the possibility of reduced sentences for PKK members who surrender. A parliamentary committee has recently completed a draft report that will guide lawmakers in crafting or amending relevant legislation.

Public response to the disarmament initiative remains mixed. The PKK’s violent history, which includes thousands of civilian and security personnel deaths since the 1980s, has left deep wounds in Turkish society. Recent incidents during Nevruz celebrations have further inflamed tensions. Social media users expressed outrage over images showing pro-PKK groups displaying terrorist propaganda and a speech delivered by a recently released PKK member who had been convicted for a 1991 terrorist attack.

The DEM Party, which has faced allegations of ties to the PKK, organized many of the Nevruz events where these incidents occurred. Turkish authorities have consistently maintained that while the party presents itself as a legitimate political entity, it serves as a political extension of the terrorist organization.

Turkey, the United States, and the European Union all designate the PKK as a terrorist organization. The conflict has claimed more than 40,000 lives since the PKK launched its insurgency in 1984, primarily in Turkey’s southeastern regions.

The current disarmament process represents one of the most significant opportunities in decades to end the conflict, though challenges remain. Analysts note that previous attempts at peace have collapsed, and hardliners on both sides may resist reconciliation efforts.

As the government proceeds with its legislative framework for disarmament, security operations like those resulting in the recent detentions highlight the delicate balance authorities are attempting to maintain—encouraging peaceful resolution while continuing to enforce laws against terrorist propaganda.
