White House Sparks Outrage with Controversial Jan. 6 Anniversary Website

The White House has ignited fierce criticism after launching a new webpage commemorating the five-year anniversary of the January 6 Capitol riots, presenting a narrative that dramatically reinterprets the events of that day. Released Tuesday afternoon, the official government website portrays the rioters as “patriots” while casting Democrats as “the real insurrectionists.”

The webpage features a prominent banner displaying former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the nine members of the House January 6 committee, alongside a timeline that reflects President Donald Trump’s version of events. The site’s content has drawn immediate condemnation from journalists and political analysts who describe it as distorting historical reality.

New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker, who covered the riots from Washington, sharply criticized the administration’s portrayal. “In a breathtaking reversal of reality, Trump uses a taxpayer-funded White House website to whitewash the history of Jan. 6, blaming Capitol Police, Democrats and (Mike) Pence — everyone but himself and the mob that stormed the Capitol,” Baker wrote on X.

The official government website accuses Capitol Police of “escalating tensions” during the riot and characterizes former Vice President Mike Pence’s certification of the 2020 election as an act of “cowardice.” It also reiterates Trump’s unsubstantiated claims that the election was “stolen” in what it calls “the greatest election theft in U.S. history.”

“In truth, it was the Democrats who staged the real insurrection by certifying a fraud-ridden election, ignoring widespread irregularities, and weaponizing federal agencies to hunt down dissenters,” the White House webpage claims, adding that “Pelosi’s own security lapses invited the chaos they later exploited to seize and consolidate power.”

The site stands in stark contrast to the judicial and historical record of January 6, 2021, when thousands of Trump supporters violently breached the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory. The riot resulted in multiple deaths, including that of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died shortly after confronting the mob. Four additional law enforcement officers later died by suicide.

Since returning to office, Trump has issued blanket pardons for approximately 1,600 individuals charged in connection with the riot. According to analysis by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), at least 33 of those pardoned have subsequently been rearrested, charged, or sentenced for other crimes.

The White House webpage defends these pardons, stating: “President Trump took decisive action to pardon January 6 defendants who were unfairly targeted, overcharged, and used as political examples. They were not protected by the leaders who failed them. They were punished to cover incompetence.”

The site also controversially describes Ashli Babbitt, a rioter fatally shot by police while attempting to climb through a broken window near the House chamber, as having been “murdered in cold blood.”

The webpage has drawn widespread rebuke from across the political spectrum. CNN commentator David Axelrod remarked that “the amount of damage done to this country because a troubled man could not accept defeat is epic and continues to this day,” adding that “the riot at the Capitol was one of America’s darkest chapters. No pardons or rewriting of history can erase it.”

The anti-Trump Republican group “Republicans against Trump” compared the webpage to propaganda from “Stalin’s Soviet Union or today’s North Korea,” while CNN senior reporter Daniel Dale described it as a “truly bananas up-is-down fake-history web page about what happened on January 6 and in the 2020 election.”

Former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith recently told lawmakers that the Capitol riot “does not happen” without Trump’s involvement, directly contradicting the narrative now being promoted on an official White House platform.
