BNP Leader Warns Against Anti-State Propaganda During Canal Project Launch

Member of Parliament Anisur Rahman Talukder Khokon has called on the public to remain vigilant against what he describes as coordinated propaganda efforts by groups opposed to Bangladesh’s national interests. The BNP Assistant Secretary for Mass Education made these remarks while inaugurating a canal digging program in Madaripur district on Friday.

Speaking before local officials and party members in Khoajpur and Jhaudi unions of Sadar Upazila, Khokon identified what he called “a vested group” that has historically worked against Bangladesh’s interests since the 1971 independence movement. According to the Madaripur-3 constituency representative, these elements continue to undermine the country through sophisticated disinformation campaigns.

“An anti-state circle is actively working to destabilize our nation through various tactics,” Khokon told attendees at the infrastructure project launch. “They’re spreading propaganda against the government through different media channels and are deliberately creating confusion among our citizens.”

The BNP leader noted a concerning evolution in these tactics, suggesting that opposition forces have expanded beyond social media campaigns to more resource-intensive approaches. “Previously, social media was their primary tool for spreading confusion, but now they’re attempting to exert influence using various financial means,” he explained.

Despite these efforts, Khokon expressed confidence that most Bangladeshis recognize these attempts as malicious. He asserted that citizens remain committed to national development and continue to embrace the ideals championed by BNP figureheads, specifically mentioning former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and the late President Ziaur Rahman.

The canal digging initiative itself represents a significant infrastructure project for the region, aimed at improving water management and agricultural productivity in Madaripur’s rural communities. Such projects have become increasingly vital as Bangladesh confronts growing challenges related to climate change, including more frequent flooding and disruptions to traditional farming practices.

Local government representatives, BNP party members, and prominent community leaders attended the inauguration event. The project reflects ongoing efforts to enhance rural infrastructure in a district that has faced significant water management challenges in recent years.

The political context of Khokon’s remarks is significant, coming at a time of heightened political tension in Bangladesh. The BNP has consistently criticized what it perceives as efforts to marginalize opposition voices in the country’s political discourse. Meanwhile, concerns about misinformation campaigns have grown across the political spectrum, with various parties accusing opponents of distorting facts and manipulating public opinion.

Political analysts note that references to “anti-independence” forces carry particular weight in Bangladesh’s political rhetoric, often serving as shorthand for those allegedly aligned with Pakistan during the 1971 Liberation War. Such language continues to resonate deeply in a nation where the independence struggle remains a defining historical moment.

The Madaripur region, located in south-central Bangladesh, has traditionally been an important agricultural area, making water management projects particularly consequential for local economic development and food security. Infrastructure improvements like the canal digging initiative are seen as crucial investments in rural communities that remain heavily dependent on agriculture.

As Bangladesh navigates complex political and economic challenges, statements from officials like Khokon highlight the ongoing tension between development priorities and political rivalries that continue to shape the country’s national conversation.
