Russians’ Propaganda Flag-raising Attempt in Pokrovsk Met with Ukrainian Counteraction

Russian forces attempted a staged propaganda operation in the embattled city of Pokrovsk on Monday, raising flags in one district before quickly retreating as Ukrainian forces continued clearing operations throughout the urban area, according to military officials.

The “East” troop grouping of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that Russian invaders exploited dense fog conditions to conduct what they described as a “flag-raising” in one section of the strategically important Donetsk Oblast city. Ukrainian military officials characterized the action as a cynical attempt to fabricate evidence suggesting complete Russian control of Pokrovsk.

“The occupiers, taking advantage of the dense fog, made another attempt at a ‘flag-raising’ in one of the city’s districts so that propagandists could use it as proof of taking control of the entire Pokrovsk,” the East grouping stated in their morning operational update. “After that, they hastily fled, and the clearing of enemy groups is ongoing.”

Ukrainian officials emphasized that such propaganda efforts have resulted in significant Russian casualties, as these staged operations expose their forces to Ukrainian defensive actions. The statement highlights the information warfare dimension of the conflict, where visual imagery and territorial claims play critical roles in shaping perceptions of battlefield momentum.

Despite challenging weather conditions in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian forces continue to employ aerial reconnaissance and artillery strikes against Russian positions. The operational update stressed that Ukrainian units “do not stop aerial reconnaissance, adjustment, and fire damage to enemy groups” despite the adverse conditions.

The fighting around Pokrovsk represents one of the most critical fronts in the ongoing war. The city, which had a pre-war population of about 60,000, serves as a vital logistics hub for Ukrainian forces in Donetsk Oblast. Its strategic importance has increased following Russian advances in the region over recent months, with Moscow’s forces intensifying their push toward the city since late summer.

In nearby Myrnohrad, approximately 10 kilometers east of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian forces reported maintaining defensive positions while eliminating enemy units attempting to approach the settlement. Both cities form part of Ukraine’s defensive line protecting remaining Ukrainian-held territories in western Donetsk Oblast.

The East grouping also noted efforts to establish “additional logistical routes to Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad” to ensure reliable supply chains for Ukrainian defenders. These logistics corridors are crucial for delivering ammunition, medical supplies, and other essential materials to frontline units facing relentless Russian pressure.

The situation around Pokrovsk has deteriorated in recent weeks, with Russian forces making incremental advances through surrounding settlements. Military analysts have pointed to Russia’s willingness to sustain heavy casualties to achieve tactical gains in the area, employing what Ukrainian commanders have described as “meat assault” tactics involving waves of infantry attacks.

In a related development, partisan movement ATESH reported that Russian assault troops operating on the Pokrovsk front have been observed looting the bodies of their own fallen soldiers, suggesting discipline and morale issues among certain Russian units in the sector.

The battle for Pokrovsk represents a critical juncture in Russia’s campaign to secure the remainder of Donetsk Oblast, one of the four Ukrainian regions Moscow claims to have annexed despite not fully controlling them. Ukrainian defense of the city and surrounding areas continues to be a priority as winter conditions set in across the eastern front.
